ambushed the couple outside a house and opened fire.
A Pakistani couple was gunned down in broad daylight in what police are calling a brutal honour killing.
Farhan Ahmed Gujjar and his wife Shahzadi had married against family wishes five months earlier. They were targeted after returning to visit relatives.
Shahzadi’s family had opposed the marriage from the start.
The couple had left their hometown, Daska, and moved to Chichawatni to avoid threats.
But on their visit back, Shahzadi’s brother Zulfiqar and his accomplice Aryan Iqbal ambushed the couple outside a house and opened fire.
The couple suffered multiple gunshot wounds and were killed instantly.
Locals rushed to the scene. Police arrived shortly after and moved the bodies for autopsy.
Both were taken to the Tehsil Headquarters Hospital in Chichawatni.
After post-mortem procedures, the bodies were handed over to their relatives.
DPO Sahiwal Rana Tahir Rehman Khan took immediate notice and demanded a full report from the police handling the case.
A murder case has been officially registered. A special team is now working to arrest the two suspects, who are currently on the run.
Authorities have stated the killers will be arrested and punished under the law. There will be no leniency, police said in a statement.
The murder has reignited concerns about honour killings in Pakistan, especially involving couples who choose to marry against family expectations.
Farhan and Shahzadi’s case was one of many in which relocation still could not guarantee safety from such violence.
Human rights groups condemned the killing and called for improved protection for couples and women facing similar threats.
This is not the only recent honour killing incident in the region.
In a nearby village, a young woman was also killed on May 2, 2025.
The victim, 22-year-old Mehwish, had left home earlier with a boy.
After local elders intervened, she returned home under a Panchayat decision.
That same night, her brothers – Fazal, Abid, and Rastadar Maqsood – allegedly strangled her to death in another act of honour killing.
Police say all three are now in hiding. Raids are underway to capture them and bring them to justice.
Chichawatni’s community remains shaken by both crimes, as calls grow louder for immediate and strict legal action.
