A Pakistani woman was shot dead near a sessions court in Gujrat on November 8, 2021.

It was reported that she was killed by members of her family over an honour-related issue.

The victim has been identified as Muneeba Cheema.

The 25-year-old got married to a man named Adnan after eloping with him a few weeks before the shooting.

Because her family were against her relationship, they filed a kidnap case against Adnan and his brother Rizwan.

Rizwan was subsequently arrested.

On the day of the incident, Muneeba and Adnan went to the sessions court in a bid to get Rizwan released.

She explained that she was not kidnapped and had left her home under her own will to get married to Adnan.

After leaving the court, Muneeba asked her husband to get a bottle of water for her.

Adnan went to a nearby shop while Muneeba waited inside the car.

At this point, two men on a motorbike rode up to the vehicle and opened fire, killing the Pakistani woman instantly.

The assailants soon fled.

Upon seeing what happened, Adnan suspected that in-laws were behind the shooting and filed a police case against them.

District Police Officer (DPO) Umar Salamat confirmed that Adnan had registered a case against three suspects.

Meanwhile, officers transported the victim’s body to the Aziz Bhatti Shaheed Teaching Hospital for an autopsy.

Officers also analysed the CCTV footage from cameras in the area.

On November 9, 2021, police arrested Afzal Cheema, the father of the victim. He was charged under sections 302, 311, 148 and 149 of the Pakistan Penal Code.

Officers said that raids are being conducted to arrest the other two suspects, Imran Afzal Cheema and Khalid Cheema.

Imran has been identified as the victim’s brother while Khalid is a cousin. Both men remain on the run.

DPO Salamat revealed that Khalid used to be a constable of the Gujrat Police and was posted at Lalamusa Sadar Police Station.

According to the police investigation, Muneeba’s family intended to snatch her while her husband was at the shop.

However, Imran opened fire in a fit of anger, killing his sister instantly.

It was also revealed that Afzal watched the incident unfold nearby.

Police are currently working to arrest the two suspects but are also looking to determine whether anyone else was involved.
