An Indian woman has been killed in a suspected case of ‘honour killing’.

The 20-year-old woman was allegedly killed by her family members after eloping with a man belonging to a different community.

The tragic incident occurred on August 2, 2021, in Madhya Pradesh’s Gwalior city.

According to a police official, the family members attempted to pass the woman’s death off as a suicide case.

However, a forensic report proved their claim to be false.

The police official also said that they arrested the woman’s father and brother on Wednesday, August 11, 2021, in connection with her murder.

Police are still searching for three other suspects, whose whereabouts are currently unknown.

According to Superintendent of Police, Atmaram Sharma, the Indian woman left town to elope with a man from a different community on June 5, 2021.

She reportedly returned on July 7, 2021.

After she first disappeared, her parents filed a missing person’s report at Janakgani police station. Then, on her return, the police sent her to a women’s shelter.

On July 31, 2021, the Indian woman consented to stay with her parents and ended up returning home.

However, by August 2, 2021, the woman was dead. The father went to the police station soon after his daughter’s death. He claimed she had committed suicide by hanging herself.

A police team and a team of forensic experts then conducted an investigation and concluded that the woman did not hang herself.

According to the police, she was hanged by others.

The police official also said that, during questioning, the father and other family members confessed to killing the Indian woman and attempting to pass it off as suicide.

The police then arrested the father and brother, registering a case of murder against them.

He added that police are still looking for three other suspects – the Indian woman’s uncle and her two cousins.

Honour killings often occur in many Indian states. In March 2021, an Indian man was arrested for beheading his brother-in-law in a supposed honour killing.

Twenty-one-year-old Deeraj chopped off his brother-in-law Brijesh’s head with an axe. He then put his head in a sack and made his way to the police station, before being arrested.

According to Superintendent of Police, Ravi Chouhan, Deeraj was upset as his sister, Puja, was unhappy in her marriage after she eloped with Brijesh.

He said that Brijesh would abuse her, which led him to chop his head and arms off in anger.
