the girl had been tortured before being strangled to death.
In another case of honour killing in India, five family members and a neighbour from Punjab have been arrested for killing the daughter over her relationship with a boy.
Police from Sri Ganganagar on the border of Rajasthan and Punjab, have arrested Om Parkash, his brothers Anil Kumar, Atma Ram and Sohan Lal, mother Samarth Devi and neighbour Jawahar Lal Shaku for killing 19-year-old Krishna.
They allegedly did not approve of Krishna’s boyfriend, therefore, they committed this act of honour killing.
Parkash also lied about how his sister died in an attempt to divert police suspicions away from him.
The incident came to light when police officers received a report after someone had provided information at the district police control room on Saturday, March 16, 2019.
The unknown person had said that a girl had died under strange circumstances and the family was preparing to cremate her.
When police reached the area and questioned the family, Parkash claimed that his sister had gone missing at approximately 12:15 am and was found dead on the side of a road.
The girl’s body was taken for a post-mortem. Examination results revealed that they found injury marks on her head as well as other parts of the body.
The injuries suggested that the girl had been tortured before being strangled to death.
Krishna’s family was not able to explain why the police had not been informed. Police suspected that this was a case of honour killing and the family was arrested.
An investigation indicated that Krishna and another girl had left their homes at 12:15 am on Friday, March 15, 2019, to meet their boyfriends, Durga Ram and Kulwinder Singh.
When Krishna’s family went to look for their daughter, they spotted Ram and Singh dropping the girl’s in their car at 3:15 am.
Reportedly, Krishna’s family became angry at her and beat her with a stick before strangling her to death.
The five family members of Krishna and a neighbour remain in custody while the investigation continues.
Honour killing is a big issue in South Asian countries like India and Pakistan.
One incident in Pakistan that took place in November 2018, involved two sisters who were murdered by their cousins for allegedly going out with boys.
Bisma and Naheed Bibi, from Islamabad, had returned home after socialising with boys to find their cousins waiting for them.
The girls were strangled by their male cousins as a way of preserving family honour through honour killing.
