Police have arrested an Indian man after it was found he tried to fake his own death.

It was reported that he plotted to fake his own death after murdering a builder, trying to pass off the victim’s body as his own.

He received help from his wife.

According to police, he committed the crime to avoid being convicted of the murder of his daughter.

The suspect has been identified as 36-year-old Sudesh Kumar.

In 2018, Sudesh was charged in connection with the murder of his teenage daughter. It was said to be an honour killing after she eloped with her lover.

He was detained but never convicted of the killing.

In 2020, he was released pending a trial as authorities had paroled some detainees in a bid to prevent overcrowded prisons from being overwhelmed by Covid-19 cases.

However, Sudesh became concerned that he would be sent back to prison.

As a result, he came up with a plan.

In November 2021, police discovered a body in Ghaziabad, on the outskirts of New Delhi.

The body was found with Sudesh’s clothes and identification card.

Officers went to his home in Delhi and his wife, Anupama, identified the body as her husband’s.

Superintendent Iraj Raja said:

“The body was partially burnt and its face was beyond recognition.

“We traced it (the body) back to (Kumar’s) home and got his wife to identify the body.

“She promptly identified it as her husband’s body. However, we were not convinced.”

Police received a tip-off that the Indian man was alive. On December 10, 2021, Sudesh was caught outside his home.

It was discovered that he intended to visit his wife.

CCTV footage also found Sudesh carrying the body onto a bike.

SI Raja continued: “Upon being interrogated, he spilled the beans.”

Sudesh told police that he befriended a builder who was of similar height and build. The builder was identified as Domen Ravidas.

He invited him to his home under the pretence of doing some repair work.

Sudesh gave the builder a set of his clothes. He then plied Domen with alcohol.

When Domen was in an inebriated state, Sudesh beat him to death. He then burned the body in a bid to mislead the police.

Sudesh placed his identification card into the pocket and dumped the body. The body was discovered the next day.

SI Raja said that Sudesh and his wife have both been arrested and charged with murder.

He added: “The couple hatched an elaborate plot, but police managed to crack this blind murder case.

“This team will be awarded for its work.”
