Pakistani policeman Asif Ali, aged 25, of Mandi Bahauddin, Punjab, Pakistan, was murdered in an honour killing incident on Sunday, March 10, 2019.

He was killed by the family of a woman he was friends with. The incident took place in Batapur, Lahore, Pakistan.

It was reported that the woman’s family may have killed him as they thought Asif was romantically associated with her.

Officer Ali served in the Special Protection Unit (SPU), a force set up to ensure the safety of foreign people in the city.

According to the police, he had gone to meet his friend who lived in a nearby village on Sunday, March 10, 2019.

The woman’s family were there and as they saw Asif meet her, they became extremely angry.

They shot at him. The victim suffered multiple gunshot wounds and died instantly.

In a bid to get rid of the evidence, the suspects hid Asif’s body under a bed and fled the crime scene.

As they left, they called the police and told them that a robbery was committed at their house.

A police team led by Superintendent Shahbaz Elahi reached the spot and found Asif’s body.

Officers collected forensic evidence from the house. They also recorded statements from witnesses.

Asif’s brother-in-law filed a complaint against the suspects after he became suspicious about their involvement. Police investigated the matter further.

Based on the complaint, police registered an FIR against the woman, her father and her brother.

Honour killing is a massive issue in Pakistan. An incident of honour killing is reported almost every day.

In another incident, a 25-year-old man was shot six times for marrying a woman of his choice. He was shot dead in front of his wife.

In 2016, a girl was burnt alive by her mother and other members of her family for marrying the man of her choice.

The girl’s family persuaded her to return to their home by promising her that they will have a traditional ceremony to acknowledge her wedding.

One high profile case occurred in February 2019. A 16-year-old girl was killed because she wanted to marry someone from another village.

The perpetrator Zulfiqar Wassan, also known as Zulfo, kidnapped and later shot Ramsha Wassan.

The incident received a lot of attention because some activists said that it was done under the orders of the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP).

It was said by Khairpur police that Zulfo was related to the PPP leaders Manzoor Wassan and Nawab Wassan.

Others called it a “cold-blooded murder” as they said the suspect had no relation to the family.

Police officers registered the case as an honour killing and Zulfo was arrested.
