“What kind of message are you sending"

Mann Mast Malang, currently the most-watched drama on Geo TV, has once again drawn sharp criticism for its controversial content.

In episode 49, a particular scene has ignited outrage.

It features Mobeen, the elder brother of Kabir Khan, deciding to take a second wife to fulfil his desire for a child.

Meanwhile, his first wife Wafa, depicted as being depressed, is shown smoking on screen.

This portrayal of a woman smoking has struck a nerve with many viewers, who feel the show has crossed a cultural and moral line.

The drama, penned by Tere Bin writer Nooran Makhdoom and directed by Ali Faizan, follows the turbulent story of Riya Khan and Kabir Khan.

They are childhood family friends turned bitter enemies.

While it has been a ratings juggernaut, audiences have increasingly questioned its direction.

One viewer questioned: “What kind of message are you sending by showing a depressed bhabhi casually smoking on TV?”

Another added: “This isn’t positivity or mental health awareness — this is poor storytelling.”

Some critics focused on the realism of the scene, pointing out how convincingly the actress smoked.

One person said: “She’s not acting, she’s a smoker.”

More serious concerns were raised about the message that such content sends to impressionable audiences.

One viewer commented: “Adding a ‘Smoking Kills’ warning doesn’t absolve you.

“You are normalising harmful behaviour instead of using your platform to promote Islamic or moral values.”

This isn’t the first time Mann Mast Malang has landed in hot water.

Previous episodes were slammed for showing scenes that implied forced romance.

There was also a bedroom scene that viewers labelled “inappropriate”.

At the time, many viewers demanded that the drama be banned from airing altogether.

Interestingly, despite the backlash, lead actor Danish Taimoor responded to criticism by posting about the show’s soaring ratings.

His message emphasised how the numbers speak for themselves, indirectly dismissing concerns raised by critics.

While the drama continues to dominate in viewership, the ongoing pattern of controversial content has sparked a larger debate.

Viewers are now questioning where entertainment ends and irresponsible storytelling begins.

With more episodes yet to air, all eyes are on how the creators respond, if at all.

The drama has crossed 600 million views across YouTube and has achieved popularity across Pakistan, India, Bangladesh, and Nepal.
