"Viewers are going to be your feedback."
Jason Shah said he felt sorry for Sharmin Segal following the trolling she was subjected to.
Sharmin was trolled for her performance in Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Heeramandi: The Diamond Bazaar (2024).
In the Netflix series, the actress played Alamzeb, the youngest daughter of Mallikajaan (Manisha Koirala).
The criticism directed towards Sharmin led her to disable her Instagram comments.
Revealing his feelings on the matter, Jason Shah said:
“I think it shows that you can have the greatest director there.
“But, I wasn’t there so I don’t know what was spoken.
“As a director to actor, maybe that was what they were going for. I am not sure.
“I have heard a lot about this, honestly, I feel a bit sorry for her.
“In certain scenes to me, it felt like something needs to happen, but it is a different kind of role.
“To be honest, to keep that one tone, whether it is me smacking her on the table or Tajdar dying, maybe that’s what they were going for.
“I definitely felt that the character could have intensified a lot more.
“There could have been a lot of different ups and downs, and the graph could have been very different because you had the opportunity, the scope to do so much.
“But if that’s what they were going for and accomplished, great. If not, then it is what it is.
“Ultimately, your viewers are going to be your feedback.
“People have said, ‘I hate you’ to me, because to them I have done a good job.
“For me, that’s mission accomplished coming in as an antagonist, you want them to get that anger towards your character.”
Jason Shah portrayed the recurring role of Alastair Cartwright in the show.
Previously, Sanjay Leela Bhansali defended Sharmin.
He said: “Somebody who doesn’t want to be a tawaif, she doesn’t talk like a tawaif, she doesn’t walk like a tawaif.
“Her face had innocence, whereas all the others had lived life, they had survived manipulation and mental games.
“You needed somebody with a fresh, innocent quality to her.
“I felt that Sharmin was the right choice for Alam not because she’s my niece.”
The actor also recently reflected on working with Aamir Khan in Thugs Of Hindostan (2018).
He said: “It was wonderful to see him so immersed in his character.
“I don’t think I was in his space. He was just miles away from everyone.”
“And his perfectionist side. I remember this one shot: I was looking through an eyeglass and he kept asking the director for one more retake.
“Even though the director said, ‘I think we got the shot,’ he kept asking for ‘one more’.
“Aamir being Aamir.”
On the work front, along with Heeramandi: The Diamond Bazaar, Jason Shah also appeared in the Tamil film Mission: Chapter 1 where he played Neil.
