the suspect confessed to raping his stepdaughter
An Indian girl, aged 12, from Mohali, Punjab, gave birth to a baby boy on April 8, 2019, after she was raped by her stepfather.
The baby was delivered at the Government Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) in Chandigarh. The victim was in a critical condition after doctors performed an emergency C-section to deliver the baby.
It was heard that the victim was raped by her stepfather on multiple occasions. The sexual abuse came to light in January 2019 when the girl’s teachers noticed an unusual growth of her belly.
The school contacted the victim’s mother, who then took her to a hospital in Mohali, where doctors confirmed that she was pregnant.
Counselling revealed that the girl was repeatedly raped by her stepfather, who used to drink and then rape the child when her mother was not home. He used to work as a mechanic at a local garage.
The ordeal had been going on since the victim’s father died and her mother married the suspect in 2014.
Following the revelation, the counsellors told the victim’s mother about the ordeal.
The accused was arrested during the last week of January 2019 and on the basis of a complaint filed by the victim’s mother, a case was registered against the man under the IPC and the POCSO Act.
When questioned by police, the suspect confessed to raping his stepdaughter whilst under the influence of alcohol.
The girl was seven-months pregnant when she was taken into care by the Mohali district administration. They handed her over to a care home where they admitted her to hospital.
She was kept under medical supervision until her delivery on Monday, April 8, 2019.
The girl was in a critical condition and doctors had no option but to deliver her baby prematurely.
The procedure was a success and the victim and her baby were doing fine according to Deputy Commissioner Gurpreet Kaur Sapra.
DC Sapra added: “A team of our officials, along with District Legal Service Authority officials, was at the hospital to provide all help to the victim.”
As the girl remains in hospital, it is likely that the baby will be put up for adoption.
However, the state government authorities are yet to make a decision on the victim’s rehabilitation.
In another incident, a father from Tamil Nadu was arrested for raping his 13-year-old daughter which resulted in her becoming pregnant.
The incident came to light when the girl complained of stomach problems. When it was revealed that she was pregnant, she told her mother about the sexual abuse.
Police was then informed about it and the man was arrested and booked under the POCSO Act.
