Cockroach Janta Party condemned the detention.
Indian YouTuber Dhruv Rathee was detained by police at his residence in Gurugram on October 10, 2026.
His detention came ahead of a planned protest by the Cockroach Janta Party in New Delhi.
The protest was organised over alleged irregularities in the country’s electoral rolls recently.
Authorities had tightened security measures to prevent demonstrators from reaching the protest site.
Police detained Rathee at his home located in Sector 56, Gurugram, that morning.
He was reportedly preparing to join the demonstration planned at Jantar Mantar at the time.
This detention came amid a wider preventive operation launched against protesters and activists nationwide.
The Cockroach Janta Party condemned the detention of Rathee and several other demonstrators publicly.
The party demanded their “immediate and unconditional release” following the detentions.
In a press release, the party accused the government of attempting to suppress dissent.
They specifically linked this suppression to allegations surrounding electoral irregularities in the country.
Delhi Police had already refused permission for the demonstration earlier in the week.
They cited security concerns and procedural requirements as reasons behind the refusal.
They also pointed to the late submission of the application as another contributing factor.
Around 150 protesters were detained at various locations across New Delhi during the operation.
Police sought to prevent these protesters from reaching Jantar Mantar, the designated protest area.
Authorities had also introduced extensive security arrangements ahead of the planned gathering that day.
These arrangements included barricades and designated detention facilities set up across the city.
The demonstration centred on allegations of irregularities in the Special Intensive Revision process.
This exercise is meant to review and update electoral rolls across the country.
Protesters also demanded accountability from Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar over the controversy.
The Cockroach Janta Party has called for Kumar’s resignation amid the ongoing dispute.
This dispute has drawn considerable political attention from various quarters in recent days.
Critics have questioned the voter list revision process and its overall transparency.
Concerns have also been raised about its potential impact on eligible voters nationwide.
The Election Commission’s exercise has become a major point of contention recently.
This contention exists primarily between opposition groups and the current authorities in power.
The planned protest was expected to bring together CJP supporters and other activists.
These groups had planned to gather in New Delhi for the demonstration that day.
However, police restrictions and preventive detentions disrupted these plans significantly before the event began.
