"It’s quite dark but still in the romance space”

Deepika Padukone has revealed that she will be starring in a dark romantic film and will begin shooting in early 2020.

Dark romanticism is a genre of film which combines the irrational, grotesque side with the idea of love.

Previously, Deepika has featured in numerous romantic films. Including, Bachna Ae Haseeno (2008), Love Aaj Kal (2009), Cocktail (2012), Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani (2013), Goliyon Ki Rasleela: Ram-Leela (2013) and Chennai Express (2013).

At the 2019 Jio MAMI Movie Mela with Star, Anupama Chopra, moderator and film critic, asked Deepika whether she will be doing a romantic film next.

In response Deepika Padukone said:

“I have found a film that I am likely to do early next year (2020) but it’s not light. It’s quite dark but still in the romance space.”

Before this, audiences will see Deepika on the big screen in the film Chhapaak (2020). The film is based on the life of acid attack survivor, Laxmi Agarwal.

Deepika has put on the producer hat for this project and it is due to release on January 10, 2020.

When asked about the film, she said:

“As of now, this has been the toughest film I’ve done.”

The actress is also due to make an appearance in Kabir Khan’s 83 (2020). The film will showcase the like of cricketing legend, Kapil Dev.

Deepika Padukone will play the role of Romi Dev, wife of Kapil Dev, to be essayed by real-life husband Ranveer Singh.

Together Ranveer and Deepika have starred in Goliyon Ki Rasleela: Ram-Leela (2013), Bajirao Mastani (2015) and Padmaavat (2018).

Commenting on how they keep their personal and professional life separate, Deepika explained:

“If you see Ranveer and I on set, we are very different than what we are otherwise. We may not even sometimes drive together because we are in a different headspace.

“It’s not on purpose. There’s no expectation of behaving like husband and wife or boyfriend and girlfriend when you’re working.”

She continued to state what it was like while filming for 83:

“On 83, I’m not thinking whether he’s my husband as there’s so much to think about at that moment, the scenes, the lines. Your mind is occupied and you’re performing like your character and all those things come into play.”

In addition, Deepika was being considered for the remake of Satte Pe Satta (1982) because like Hema Malini she is also South Indian.

Yet, due to copyright issues, this was not possible.

As a result of this problem, the film gravitated towards the Hollywood classic Seven Brides for Seven Brothers (1954).

This allowed for the characters to be redefined and instead Anushka Sharma will be signing for the film. Reportedly, Hrithik Roshan is being considered to lead the cast.

Despite this role not working out for Deepika, her upcoming releases Chhapaak and 83 will certainly make an impression on audiences.

Deepika’s dark romantic film will allow viewers to see a new side to the actress as we eagerly wait for shooting to begin.
