“It was horrific on the day they were found."
A worker in Bollywood and his girlfriend died after taking green pills believed to contain a lethal synthetic drug, according to police and council officials.
Gagan Brar and Kamaldeep Kaur were found unresponsive in their bedroom by flatmates on Havelock Road in Southall.
Ambulances and police rushed to the scene on Bank Holiday Monday but were unable to save them.
The couple were originally from India.
Gagan worked as a driver for Bollywood celebrities when they visited London, while Kamaldeep had recently graduated from university.
Police believe the couple obtained the pills after visiting an unidentified nightclub in South London on May 24. The pills were reportedly green with “80” stamped on one side and possibly “OP” on the other.
A neighbour, who lives in the same Southall block, said:
“To me, they were a clean-cut, hardworking couple who left early in the morning and were ambitious. They were a pleasure to be around.
“He worked in the Indian film industry as part of the crew and was working his way up.
“He was from a good family and the couple had their whole lives ahead of them.
“It’s a total shock – if something like this can happen to them, it can happen to anyone. They were the perfect couple just enjoying life.
“It was horrific on the day they were found. I think they had been out with the flatmates the night before.
“They wondered why the couple hadn’t got up the next day, originally thinking they were just having a lie-in. Then one went in their bedroom and found them.
“The flatmates were in total shock. Loads of police and ambulances came. One of the flatmates was vomiting, it was just terrible.”
Another neighbour described the cricket-loving pair as “just the nicest people you could meet”.
In a statement, the Metropolitan Police said: “Police continue to make enquiries following the sudden deaths of a 28-year-old man and a 20-year-old woman in Ealing on Monday.
“This is following reports that the individuals allegedly passed away after taking an illicit substance in the form of a green pill.”
“No arrests have been made at this time and we’re working closely with our partners, including the health service and councils, to issue advice to people in the area.”
Ealing Council also raised concerns over the pills, warning that they are believed to contain nitazenes – powerful synthetic opioids which can be 50 to 500 times stronger than heroin.
Dealers across the city are selling the pills but they can be mis-sold as other drugs, including oxycodone, a highly addictive prescription opioid used to treat severe pain.
One theory being explored is that the couple thought they were taking “oxys” or sleeping tablets.
No one has been arrested, and the investigation is ongoing.
