The Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) has arrested eight individuals involved in circulating fake images of Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz.

During a press conference in Lahore, the FIA’s Cyber Crime Circle revealed details about the operation.

It was led by Additional Director Sarfraz Chaudhry and Assistant Director Zawar Hussain.

They revealed that eight individuals have been arrested so far, with evidence linking them to the tampered images shared on social media.

Chaudhry confirmed that the suspects, allegedly linked to a political party, had shared AI-generated visuals using fake social media accounts.

The material was reportedly designed to tarnish the reputations of public figures and undermine Pakistan’s international relations.

Chaudhry said: “This act goes beyond politics; it’s a blatant disregard for social media ethics and respect for women.”

Among those named in the FIR are PTI leader Shahbaz Gill and YouTuber Imran Riaz Khan.

Both have been accused of inciting the spread of derogatory materials.

Gill is reportedly in the US, while Khan is also believed to have left Pakistan.

Additionally, suspects Muhammad Ejaz and Aamir Abbas were apprehended from Muzaffargarh and Toba Tek Singh, respectively.

The FIA’s joint investigation team identified 20 social media accounts actively involved in sharing the manipulated content.

Devices seized from the suspects contained materials linked to political figures, further implicating them in the campaign.

The FIA assured the public of its commitment to curbing such acts, with Chaudhry stating:

“It’s a conspiracy against the state.”

The suspects face charges under Pakistan’s Prevention of Electronic Crimes Act (PECA) 2016, including Sections 20, 21(d), and 24.

These laws propose sentences ranging from five to seven years and fines of up to PKR 5 million (£14,600).

Officials emphasised that efforts to apprehend individuals operating from abroad would include passport and ID card blockages.

If declared fugitives, the agency plans to seek assistance from Interpol.

The issue began after images of Maryam Nawaz greeting UAE President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan during his visit to Pakistan were edited and widely circulated.

The images showed Maryam and Sheikh Mohammad touching hands.

The visuals sparked backlash, with many accusing Maryam Nawaz of inappropriate behaviour.

They shamed her, reminding her that she was a married woman. Eventually, it was discovered that the images were fake.

The operation continues as authorities pursue additional suspects, vowing to hold all involved accountable to safeguard the public figures’ reputations.
