one of the most ambitious and immersive titles
Video games are set to reach new heights in 2025, with some of the industry’s most anticipated titles promising groundbreaking gameplay, cutting-edge graphics, and unforgettable stories.
Developers are pushing the boundaries of what’s possible, creating expansive worlds and immersive experiences that have gamers counting down the days.
From long-awaited sequels to innovative new stories, these upcoming releases are already making waves in the gaming community.
Here’s a look at the 10 biggest video games expected to define 2025 and capture players’ imaginations worldwide.
Grand Theft Auto VI
Undoubtedly the biggest gaming release of 2025 will be Grand Theft Auto VI.
Twelve years after its predecessor, GTA VI will introduce players to a more immersive and dynamic world as the franchise returns to the neon lights of Vice City.
Players will take control of Lucia, who embarks on a life of crime with her partner.
Although it hasn’t been confirmed whether players can switch between characters, it is likely given that GTA V allowed gamers to play three characters.
The story’s premise remains under wraps but based on Red Dead Redemption 2, it will be one of the most ambitious and immersive titles in all of gaming.
GTA VI is scheduled for the latter half of 2025 and despite worries that it could be delayed, Rockstar insists it is on course for its expected release
Marvel 1943: Rise of Hydra
In recent years, Marvel video games have been hit and miss.
Insomniac Games’ Spider-Man entries have been very successful while Crystal Dynamics’ Avengers was less favourable among critics.
Marvel 1943: Rise of Hydra sees worlds collide amid the chaos of war.
Captain America and Azzuri, the Black Panther of the 1940s, must set their differences aside to form an uneasy alliance to confront a common enemy.
Fighting alongside Gabriel Jones of the Howling Commandos, and Nanali, a Wakandan spy embedded in Occupied Paris, they must join forces to stop a sinister plot that threatens to turn the havoc of WWII into the ultimate rise of Hydra.
Gamers will be able to play all four characters when it releases.
Monster Hunter Wilds
Monster Hunter Wilds is the latest entry in the beloved series of co-op action RPGs.
Players are transported to the Forbidden Lands, a mysterious wilderness that can transform in unexpected ways.
This living world is teeming with rugged wildlife adapted to an ever-changing climate, including massive monsters that players will take on in action-packed encounters.
As hunters, players protect the balance of the ecosystem, utilising resources from hunts to craft powerful gear and continue investigating the mysteries at the heart of these new lands.
Fully voiced for the first time in the series, the hunter is joined in their journey by a colourful cast of characters, including a Palico partner, Guild-appointed Handler Alma, trusty smithy Gemma, and the mysterious child Nata.
Together, the team ventures into an unexplored new frontier where surprises await around every corner.
Monster Hunter Wilds is scheduled to release on February 28, 2025.
Judas
From Ghost Story Games comes Judas, a first-person shooter about a desperate escape plan.
Judas unfolds aboard the Mayflower, a generation ship carrying the last remnants of humanity on a journey to Proxima Centauri.
Life aboard the ship is governed by three key figures: Tom, who is committed to preserving humanity in its natural form; his wife, Nefertiti, a Nobel Prize winner who envisions transforming humanity into flawless, robotic beings; and their adopted daughter, Hope, who dreams of erasing herself from existence.
The entire society on the Mayflower is tightly controlled by advanced computers, which condition residents to conform and report any deviance from expected behaviour.
The titular character manages to break free from these controls, and her actions ignite a revolution that challenges the rigid order on the ship.
Judas is expected to be released sometime in March 2025.
Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater
This upcoming video game is a remake of the 2004 hit, bringing unprecedented new graphics, immersive stealth action gameplay and sounds.
In this origin story, rival nations are secretly developing weapons that could threaten the future of mankind.
Deep in the jungle, an elite soldier must combine stealth with survival to infiltrate the enemy and stop a weapon of mass destruction from triggering the largest full-scale war the world has ever seen.
The remake is partially due to a new generation of gamers not knowing very much about the Metal Gear Solid franchise.
According to producer Noriaki Okamura, “a lot of the newer, younger generation of gamers aren’t familiar with the Metal Gear series anymore”.
Dune: Awakening
Following the success of the recent Dune films, a video game seemed a natural step.
Dune: Awakening is an open-world survival MMO set on the most dangerous planet in the universe.
The game takes place in an alternate history where Paul Atreides was never born, his mother Jessica instead following the orders of her secretive Bene Gesserit masters to give birth to a daughter.
But a destructive War of Assassins rages on.
One of the most interesting parts is that your blank slate protagonist opens up all sorts of opportunities.
The game will let you choose between the factions at war for Arrakis, building rep and accruing status with them as you go.
Learn the ways of the Fremen to survive the desert and expand your potential.
Dune: Awakening is scheduled to be released in early 2025 on PC. However, a console release might be later in the year.
State of Decay 3
The third installment of the open-world survival series, State of Decay 3 is set years after a zombie apocalypse nearly wiped out humankind.
A rising zombie threat is sweeping across the land, and it’s up to gamers to secure a future for their survivalist community.
Every choice influences events and storylines, so choose wisely – losing a community member to the zombie horde means they’re gone, along with their unique skills and strengths.
In online multiplayer mode, up to four players can join forces to build a thriving community from the ground up in a shared, persistent world.
Collaborate with friends to design, develop, and expand a base that reflects your collective vision and strategies, balancing every risk against its reward.
Death Stranding 2: On the Beach
The year 2025 is also expected to see the sequel to 2019’s Death Stranding, although it might not be until the end of the year.
Norman Reedus reprises his role as Sam as players embark on an inspiring mission of human connection beyond the UCA.
Sam and his companions set out on a new journey to save humanity from extinction.
Join them as they traverse a world beset by otherworldly enemies, obstacles and a haunting question: should we have connected?
The plot remains a mystery as the original story was scrapped by director Hideo Kojima after the Covid-19 pandemic, saying:
“I had the story written before the pandemic. But after experiencing the pandemic, I just rewrote the whole story from scratch.
“I also didn’t want to predict any more futures, so I rewrote it.”
Doom: The Dark Ages
A prequel to 2016’s Doom, the upcoming video game follows the rise of the series’ protagonist, the Doom Slayer.
The Doom Slayer rises to become the legendary demon-killing warrior fighting endlessly against the forces of Hell.
This game plans to have a different take on the series’ demon-slaying action.
According to director Hugo Martin, these changes aim to make the Dark Ages feel more like the original 1993 Doom.
He said: “At the start of every development cycle, I play the original Doom again, and have the team play it too. I realised that we still didn’t hit the mark.
“For long-time fans of the series, people who played the original Doom, you’ll see it’s really a return to form.”
Although expected to be out in 2025, a specific date has not been unveiled.
Gears of War: E-Day
Gears of War: E-Day serves as the sixth mainline entry in the iconic Gears of War series.
Set 14 years before the original game, E-Day plunges players into Emergence Day, when war heroes Marcus Fenix and Dom Santiago return home to confront a terrifying new threat: the Locust Horde.
These monstrous, subterranean creatures burst from the depths of the planet Sera, launching a relentless assault on humanity.
Players will navigate the war-torn city of Kalona, a fresh setting in the series, as they struggle for survival against the ruthless Locust in a fight to secure the future of humanity.
Published by Xbox Game Studios, this third-person shooter is scheduled for release in 2025.
As we look ahead to 2025, the gaming landscape promises some of the most ambitious and innovative titles we’ve seen yet.
From vast open worlds and gripping narratives to groundbreaking multiplayer experiences, each of these games has the potential to make a major impact on players and the industry alike.
But delays are always a possibility.
Development timelines can shift as studios prioritise quality and polish, so while these titles are expected in 2025, some may arrive a bit later.
Regardless of exact release dates, these anticipated games are set to bring thrilling new experiences that will be well worth the wait.
