"Our fastest-growing industry is our global competency sector."
Mukesh Ambani attended the Nvidia AI Summit in Mumbai to discuss the future of technology in India.
Along with Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang, the pair talked about India’s tech growth and AI advancements.
Huang called it an “extraordinary time” for India as the computing industry transitions into the intelligence industry.
While Ambani highlighted India’s digital transformation, Huang emphasised the country’s deep-tech potential.
Here are the key points discussed.
Computer Science
Jensen Huang highlighted India’s IT industry, lauding it as world-renowned for its “very large-scale”, both in terms of size and expertise.
He said: “Very few countries in the world has this natural resource, this very amazing natural resource called IT and computer science expertise.”
Huang explained that Nvidia and Ambani have been working together to “upskill about 200,000 IT professionals into the world of AI”.
India as an Innovation Hub
Mukesh Ambani stated that India has “become the home” of innovation.
He said: “Our fastest-growing industry is our global competency sector.”
Some of the work includes space research, pharmaceutical and manufacturing processing chips, among other things.
He explained that the likes of Shell and BP do their innovation in India.
Ambani added: “India is fast becoming an innovation hub for the world, in terms of where we are.”
Digital Connectivity
Ambani explained that behind the United States and China, India has the best digital connectivity infrastructure.
He said: “4G, 5G and broadband in the world.”
Ambani’s comments drew applause from the audience.
AI in India
Huang drew on Ambani’s comments that India has massive amounts of data available.
Making an announcement, he said: “In order to lead in artificial intelligence, you need to have AI model technology that India has, you need to have data, massive quantities of data.
“The last thing you need is AI infrastructure.
“We’re announcing that Reliance and Nvidia are partnering to build AI infrastructure in India.”
Huang told Ambani that India’s large population ultimately creates the country’s “AI fly-wheel”.
Ambani added: “It is important that we design and build infrastructure so that to use AI, our customers don’t have to change their phones, don’t have to change their computers.
“But they can still get good quality AI and we take the burden of putting that infrastructure together and I think that is what we are counting on you [Huang] and us to do.
“The foundry tools that we have, that we are looking forward to, development centres where we take your tools and train hundreds of thousands of developers in India.”
The billionaire said that this can help India apply intelligence in a practical way, declaring that “this is the start of the intelligence age”.
Huang said that he is “honoured and privileged” to work with Ambani in helping India to take advantage of the intelligence revolution that is on its way.
