"The problem is, we can’t do films like that."

Vikram explained that there are some films which work better in Hindi than they would in Tamil because of the huge difference in cinemagoers from the respective regions.

The actor revealed that he enjoyed Vidhu Vinod Chopra’s 12th Fail and Kiran Rao’s Laapataa Ladies, two films he believes would not work if they were made in the Tamil film industry.

He elaborated: “I loved that film and called Vidhu Vinod Chopra.

“I also really liked Laapataa Ladies and the boy (Sparsh Shrivastava) in it, who was also in Jamtara, the series I loved.

“The problem is, we can’t do films like that. The whole market goes for a toss.”

Vikram stated that because he is a star, any project that he works on becomes massive, which in turn increases expectations.

Citing the Hindi-Tamil anthology thriller David, Vikram confessed that viewers did not like his role in the film.

He continued: “I loved that role in David. Bejoy [Nambiar] wanted me to do Neil Nitin Mukesh’s role, but I chose the other role, which he said was a theatre actor’s role, someone like a comedian will do it.

“But I did that and then it released in Tamil.

“In the first shot itself, I will slap a woman, my mother will slap me, I will get kicked, hit; my best friend will love a girl, who I look and fall in love instantly as well and then I think of killing that guy to get the girl.

“Weird things which are so funny in Hindi, in Tamil people were like, ‘What the hell, how could you do that?’

“In Tamil (cinema), you’d stand for the guy, give up your life.”

Vikram highlighted the importance of understanding that Hindi and Tamil are very different markets and one can’t try both and play a “character” role unless it is on a smaller scale.

He added:

“You can’t do that, your market goes for a dip.”

“I have done it before, where I started doing smaller films just for characters. Then that starts affecting the other films. It is a very tricky thing.”

On the work front, Vikram was last seen in the Tamil action-adventure film Thangalaan.

Directed by Pa Ranjith, the film featured Vikram in five roles and was met with mixed reviews.

Set during the British Raj, the film also starred Parvathy Thiruvothu, Malavika Mohanan, Daniel Caltagirone, Pasupathy and Hari Krishnan.
