"They should have acknowledged that."

Pakistani actor Tauqeer Nasir claimed that Shah Rukh Khan’s character in Karan Johar’s Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna (2006) was copied from him.

In the film, SRK played Dev Saran.

He is a football champion, but a car accident causes a permanent limp in his leg, which prevents him from playing football.

This turns him into an extremely bitter and jealous individual.

Tauqeer claimed that Dev Saran was copied from his character in the drama series Parwaaz (1978).

The veteran actor said: “There’s one film which Shah Rukh did, which was a direct copy of my character in the drama Parwaaz.

“They should have given credit, especially Karan Johar.”

Tauqeer Nasir alleged that the limp in Dev Saran’s leg was also taken from him.

He continued: “He also has a limp on his feet just like mine.

“The role was complex where he had to choose between two extremes.

“One where he likes someone and the other where he is liked.

KANK glamourised the same concept but the point is the same.

“They should have acknowledged that.”

Although a box office success, Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna received polarising responses upon its release.

This was due to its controversial subject matter. The film tackled extramarital love.

Dev Saran and Maya Talwar (Rani Mukherji) have an affair despite being married to Rhea Saran (Preity Zinta) and Rishi Talwar (Abhishek Bachchan) respectively.

During a 2023 media interaction, Karan Johar recollected an incident where he experienced the disappointed reactions of the audience.

He said: “I was watching the film, and there was this very traditional couple sitting in front of me.

“That scene came where Shah Rukh and Rani check into a hotel room.

“The wife looked at her husband and he assured her that it is a dream sequence.”

“When they realised that it was not a dream sequence, both of them got up, took their families and walked out.

“I came out and saw this lady crying in the corner so I thought she was really moved by the film.

“Her mother saw me and said, ‘My daughter has just divorced and I told her that I would show her Karan Johar’s film to improve her mood’.

“And you’ve made this film? Is this what our values are?”

In 1999, Tauqeer Nasir was awarded the Tamgha-e-Imtiaz by the Government of Pakistan.
