Netflix has announced further news regarding their first ever Indian original series. They have drawn in a big actor to take on the lead role. None other than Saif Ali Khan!

The media streaming company revealed the amazing news on 14th July 2017. They have previously announced the new series back in 2016.

But now on their Netflix India Twitter, they shared an image of the famous Bollywood actor. They captioned it:

“Saif Ali Khan – lead actor for Sacred Games, a Netflix Original. Let that soak in.”

The Indian show, called Sacred Games, will reportedly arrive later in 2017. Netflix also confirmed it will base on Vikram Chandra’s 2006 novel of the same name.

Currently, the company have not yet revealed much of the Mumbai-based series’ story. A description has been released, which states the drama “delves into the city’s intricate web of organised crime, corruption, politics and espionage that lie beneath India’s economic renaissance”.

With these controversial themes, the series look set to become a big hit for Netflix. In addition, it will also become available in English and Hindi.

Saif reportedly said of his lead role in the series:

“Content in the digital space is taking over the existing dynamics at a rapid pace – the crown in the digital empire lies with Netflix, and it’s extremely satisfying to partner and participate in the first original series from India to be showcased on Netflix.”

On social media, many have welcomed the announcement, pleased with Saif Ali Khan as the lead character, Sartaj Singh.

Erik Barmack, Netflix’s Vice President of International Original Series, also spoke highly of Saif. He said:

“Saif Ali Khan is a true pioneer and risk-taker in Indian cinema, and we could not be any more delighted to be working with him on Sacred Games.

“His role is layered and complex, and we are thrilled to be working with such a fantastic actor to bring this story to a global audience.”

It follows Netflix’s launch in India back in 2016. While the streaming service predominantly features many Bollywood movies, it appears Netflix wants to provide more Indian-based content.

As well as Sacred Games, the company will also release it first Indian comedy special. Featuring Vir Das and Aditi Mittal, it will premiere on 18th July 2017.

Sarah is an English and Creative Writing graduate who loves video games, books and looking after her mischievous cat Prince. Her motto follows House Lannister's "Hear Me Roar".
