"This country can't tolerate talented people."
Renowned Pakistani actress Saba Qamar Zaman has responded for the first time after a petition was filed against her in Lahore.
The legal complaint alleges that the actress wore a Punjab Police uniform, specifically that of a Superintendent of Police, without official approval.
According to the petition, submitted to a Lahore sessions court, using official uniforms or insignia without permission is strictly prohibited under the law.
The controversy arose after a video surfaced online showing Saba Qamar in a dressing room wearing the SP’s uniform for a role.
The clip quickly sparked debate on social media, with some questioning the legality and others defending the actress for professional reasons.
Fellow artists have largely expressed support for Saba Qamar, highlighting that portraying law enforcement roles is a routine part of acting.
Many fans also argued that actors routinely wear police attire as part of their craft.
A user said: “Such a cheap tactic to get yourself noticed by an actress.”
Another remarked: “I can only imagine how much free time this petitioner has on his hands.”
One commented: “Can someone explain the concept of television to this person?”
Another added: “This country can’t tolerate talented people.”
Amid the criticism, Saba Qamar reshared a post by Diva Magazine’s Editor-in-Chief, Raheel Rao, who came to her defence with sarcasm.
Rao mocked the critics, asking if they expected actors portraying police officers to wear bridal attire instead of the appropriate uniform.
He explained that characters are always dressed according to the demands of their roles, rather than the personal opinions of viewers.
Responding to Rao, Saba Qamar took a light-hearted approach on her Instagram story, writing:
“Oh God! I’ve become very famous these days.”
Her humorous reaction was widely shared and interpreted as a sarcastic dismissal of the controversy surrounding her professional attire.
The petition was reportedly filed by lawyer Aftab Bajwa on behalf of a citizen, Wasim Zawar, citing a violation of official uniform rules.
As of now, neither Punjab Police nor the actress has issued an official legal statement beyond her social media response to the video.
The court is expected to schedule a preliminary hearing for the petition in the coming days, which could clarify the legal interpretation.
Meanwhile, Saba Qamar’s sarcastic and humorous approach to the petition has resonated with many online.
