"You feel like you have lost all your dignity."
Raj Kundra has broken his silence on his traumatic experiences inside prison.
Raj is the estranged husband of Shilpa Shetty. The businessman married the Bollywood actress in 2009.
In July 2021, Raj was arrested for producing pornographic content allegedly involving Poonam Pandey and Sherlyn Chopra.
He was granted bail in September 2021, after he provided a surety amount of Rs 50,000 (£470).
Raj Kundra delved into the humiliation and the seismic mental impact he experienced in prison:
“It’s humiliating because they strip you down completely in front of everyone.
“They check your bum to see if you are carrying any narcotics.
“So, you feel like you have lost all your dignity. You feel like you have gone through so much and now here also they are stripping you down.
“Media was already doing that and now this also happened.
“I felt disheartened and hurt. You don’t get proper food or sleep, and people were talking lecherously about me and Shilpa.”
The disgraced businessman also divulged the overcrowded living conditions. He said:
“I don’t know why I was not put in the barracks where the so-called celebrities are put.
“I was put in a common barrack. I have no qualms about that.
“You don’t get a VIP status when you stay in the celebrity barracks.
“It’s just that five people live there vs the common barracks where 250 people were living in a place meant only for 50 people.”

“There was so much humiliation, reputational damage. Because of me, the media went behind my wife, children and parents.
“That was painful. I knew what was going on outside. But what can you do?
“You have to remind yourself that this is just a bad phase, that I know the truth and it will come out one day.”
In October 2023, Raj Kundra sparked rumours that he had separated from Shilpa.
Taking to X, he wrote: “We have separated and kindly request you to give us time during this difficult period.”
Raj and Shilpa share two children together. A son was born on May 21, 2012. The couple welcomed a daughter via surrogacy on February 15, 2020.
Raj has a daughter with his first wife Kavita Kundra.
Raj Kundra is set to make his acting debut in a film called UT 69. The project will chronicle his experiences in Arthur Road Jail and will be directed by Shahnawaz Ali.
