The crowd cheered and clapped while Ismail’s body burned.
Pakistani police have registered a case against a mob involved in a violent attack on a police station in the Swat District.
The mob killed a man who was being questioned on suspicion of disrespecting the Quran.
The incident, which resulted in eight injuries, has sparked widespread outrage and calls for justice.
Officials reported that the unrest began when police moved the suspect, identified as Mohammad Ismail, to the Madyan Police Station for questioning.
Ismail was a tourist from the eastern Punjab province. He was staying at a local hotel when a mob accused him of burning pages from the Quran.
Swat District Police Officer Dr Zahidullah Khan said the suspect was being interrogated when the mob attacked the police station.
The mob overpowered the officers and took Ismail away.
They set fire to the police station and a police vehicle before burning Ismail alive in the middle of the road.
DPO Khan confirmed that a heavy police force had been deployed in Madyan to control the tense situation.
Videos circulating on social media show a mob gathered around a burning body and crowds outside the police station.
The crowd cheered and clapped while Ismail’s body burned.
Madyan, a well-known tourist destination in the Swat Valley, is located approximately 245 kilometres from Peshawar, the provincial capital of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
The attack has raised concerns about the safety of tourists and the region’s stability.
Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Ali Amin Gandapur took notice of the incident.
He reached out to the provincial police chief, ordering immediate measures to control the situation.
In a statement posted by Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf, Gandapur expressed regret over the incident and appealed for calm, urging the public to remain peaceful.
Former Information Minister Fawad Chaudhry also commented on the incident, expressing his dismay over the continuing violence related to blasphemy accusations in Pakistan.
Chaudhry wrote:
“And the madness continues…. We are hell-bent to commit suicide as a society,”
DPO Khan stated that police are trying to identify the individuals involved in the attack and burning of the police station.
Despite the severity of the crime, no arrests have been made yet.
The investigation is ongoing, and authorities are working to gather more details.
A user wrote: “People accuse others of blasphemy like it is nothing. So many people have died in vain just because of such false accusations.”
Another questioned: “Why did they not leave him to God? He would be alive right now.
“No one has the right to take someone’s life. Ismail might have repented before death but they didn’t even give him a chance.”
One said: “These people should be arrested. The police were already taking actions against him, why did they take justice into their own hands?”
