"the accused ignored them and kept attacking the biker."
Police have arrested businessman Salman Farooqi after video footage showed him assaulting a motorcyclist in Karachi’s Defence Housing Authority.
The footage, which shows Farooqi attacking the young man in the presence of his sister, went viral on social media and triggered public anger.
The incident occurred in DHA Phase 6, near Ittehad Commercial, on May 31, 2025, after a minor collision between Farooqi’s Land Cruiser and a motorbike.
According to police, Farooqi is the CEO of a private company.
Deputy Inspector General Asad Raza confirmed the arrest:
“The accused was arrested following a technical investigation.” Police raided Farooqi’s residence and office before taking him into custody.
A First Information Report (FIR) was registered at Gizri Police Station under FIR No. 25/278. The complainant, Muhammad Saleem, told police he witnessed the incident while on a recovery task in the area.
Saleem, who works as a sales manager at a mobile company, said:
“The accused, along with his security guard, forcibly confined the motorcyclist inside the vehicle at gunpoint.
“The victim was subjected to physical assault, verbal abuse, and threats.”
In the video, the motorcyclist can be seen repeatedly apologising. His sister is heard begging for the violence to stop, but Farooqi appears to push her aside and continue the assault.
Saleem continued: “The accompanying women kept pleading. But the accused ignored them and kept attacking the biker.”
The video, widely shared online, shows bystanders watching as the assault unfolds.
Saleem claimed multiple witnesses later posted the footage to social media, which led to widespread condemnation and demands for legal action.
Police have booked the businessman under multiple charges, including criminal intimidation, assault, unlawful confinement, and obscenity. The charges fall under sections 506B, 354, 342, and 504/34 of the Pakistan Penal Code.
The police have released a photograph of Farooqi behind bars, in what officials say is part of a transparency effort.
Authorities are still trying to locate the victim and his family to record formal statements.
Despite the public outcry, no complaint was filed by the victim. Investigators continue to rely on eyewitness accounts and video evidence.
As scrutiny mounts, law enforcement officials have assured the public that the matter is being treated seriously.
A police spokesperson said: “We are committed to ensuring justice in this case and preventing such incidents in future.”
