New Murder Case Filed Against Deposed PM Sheikh Hasina

The former Prime Minister of Bangladesh Sheikh Hasina has had another murder case filed against her after fleeing the country.

Hasina has several cases thus far filed against her.

On Sunday, August 18, 2024, another murder case was filed against Bangladesh’s former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.

The case filed is over the death of two college students during the recent anti-quota protests in the country.

It is the latest in many cases filed against the 76-year-old former PM. The case was filed against Hasina and 12 others over the murder of two students in Dhaka’s Sutrapur area.

It was reported the case was filed with the court of Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Torikul Islam over the killing of two students.

The students are Ikram Hossain Kawser, of Kobi Nazrul Government College, and Omar Faruk, of Shaheed Suhrawardi College.

The two students were shot dead in separate incidents while protesting on July 19.

The 12 others accused are: former Road Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader, Sheikh Fazle Noor Taposh, Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal and Mohammad Hasan Mahmud.

In addition to Mohibul Hasan Chowdhury Nowfel, Zunaid Ahmed Palak. Former Inspector General of Police (IGP) Abdullah Al Mamun, Syed Nurul Islam, Harun Ur Rashid, Biplob Kumar and Habibur Rahman.

Bangladesh’s anti-quota protests turned violent and deadly, gaining international attention. Authorities used excessive force, and pro-government supporters attacked protestors.

Hundreds were killed by the police and supporters of Hasina’s government. In turn, thousands were also arrested and injured.

On August 5, 2024, after weeks of protests, violence, and deaths, Hasina was forced to resign and flee. Her attempts to suppress civil dissent had failed.

Hasina has several cases thus far filed against her. These include nine for murder, one for abduction and two for committing crimes against humanity and genocide in Bangladesh.

Moreover, in Dhaka, an application was filed for registering a case against Hasina and 33 others. They are accused of carrying out a mass murder by indiscriminately firing on a rally organised by Hefazat-e-Islam.

The rally took place at Shapla Chattar in Motijheel on May 5, 2013.

In her first statement after fleeing Bangladesh issued through her son, Sajeeb Wazed, Hasina blamed the protest deaths on “vandalism, arson and violence” instigated by “the movement.”

She also claimed people died “as a result of terrorist attacks.”

Hasina stated: “I demand that those involved in this killing and vandalism be properly investigated and the culprits be identified and punished accordingly.”

Nasrin, a British Bangladeshi, told DESIblitz:

“I’m not surprised Hasina is deflecting and not taking any responsibility.”

“I’m worried she’ll be protected by her allies in India, US and elsewhere.

“But more and more will come out. It already is as those who were forcefully disappeared during her reign reappear.

“I just hope the new government doesn’t forget its intent and holds true to all the hopes we have and those in Bangladesh have.”

An interim government formed after Hasina fled to India. Nobel laureate Muhammed Yunus leads the new interim government.
