"Isn’t your title casteist?”
The teaser for Netflix’s Ghooskhor Pandat was unveiled but it has sparked backlash for its alleged casteist title.
The film stars Manoj Bajpayee as a corrupt cop whose night spirals out of control when a reluctant act of mercy toward an injured girl pulls him into a deadly web of crime.
Although the plot has sparked interest, the film’s title has prompted outrage.
On social media, many claimed the title was casteist, accusing Netflix and the filmmakers of targeting a specific community.
One asked: “Isn’t your title casteist?”
Slamming the film’s title, a user commented:
“Hello @NetflixIndia, normalisation of hatred against Pandits and Brahmins won’t be tolerated. I’ll see you in court.”
Another questioned the title choice: “The name of this movie is highly objectionable.
“Can Netflix name a movie as ‘Ghooskhor Dalit’ or ‘Ghooskhor Muslim’? Change it ASAP!”
A third added: “Absolutely shameful. They have picked a community that is a soft target to peddle their bigotry. Change it now or face a ban.”
One comment read: “Aren’t you making a casteist slur through this title! Are you pushing some kind of agenda against Brahmins? Itching for a court case or a boycott.”
Urging Netflix to remove the film, a user wrote:
“Hello @NetflixIndia, you have given the name Ghooskhor Pandat.
“Do you have the guts to put ‘Ghooskhor Muslim’ in any of your web series? Remove this title or be ready to face a mass boycott of Netflix.”
Another added: “They could have named this show anything, but they specifically chose this to set a narrative. How is this okay?
“Maybe we should start boycotting them to teach them a lesson.”
Ghooskhor Pandat, which is directed by Ritesh Shah and written by Neeraj Pandey, follows Ajay Dikshit (Manoj Bajpayee), nicknamed Pandat, whose plans to make quick money spiral out of control when he becomes involved in a conspiracy following the attack of a critically injured young woman in Delhi.
The cast also includes Nushrratt Bharuccha, Divya Dutta, Saqib Saleem, Akshay Oberoi, Shraddha Das and Kiku Sharda.
Netflix has not yet announced an official release date.
Despite the wave of backlash, neither Netflix nor the Ghooskhor Pandat team has issued a statement on the matter.
