"I love this cast and this team so very much."
Hulu has cancelled Mindy Kaling’s Not Suitable for Work after one season, leaving several major storylines unresolved.
The romantic comedy, which follows five ambitious young professionals navigating careers, relationships and friendships in New York, ended its first season on the Disney streamer two months ago.
The cancellation is the latest setback for Hulu’s young adult programming slate.
Hulu has also recently passed on pilots including Buffy: New Sunnydale, Foster Dade and Don’t Get High.
Not Suitable for Work centred on AJ (Ella Hunt), Josh (Jack Martin), Abby (Avantika), Kel (Nicholas Duvernay) and Davis (Will Angus) as their personal and professional lives became increasingly complicated.
The two-episode finale ended with several unanswered questions, including multiple love triangles and uncertainty over the characters’ careers.
AJ, Josh and Davis found themselves caught in one love triangle, while Abby, Kel and Kel’s theatre colleague became involved in another.
Meanwhile, Davis and AJ faced an uncertain future after standing up to their arrogant boss Bill, played by Jay Ellis.
Reacting to the cancellation, Mindy said in an Instagram post:
“I love this show, I loved making this show, I love these people, and I love all of you for all your sweet comments, messages, edits and for watching.”
In her own post, Avantika wrote:
“I love this cast and this team so very much.
“Not Suitable for Work gave me such an opportunity of a lifetime and introduced me to people and audiences I could have never even dreamed of meeting before.
“I am so grateful to Mindy, Charlie, Hulu, Warner Bros for giving us this chance. We love you.”
The series was originally titled Murray Hill before Hulu changed its name.
Not Suitable for Work received mixed reviews from critics, earning 54% on Rotten Tomatoes. However, audiences responded more positively, giving it an 82% audience score on the platform.
Mindy Kaling had remained hopeful about a second season.
She previously told Deadline: “Our writers room has been up for Season 2, which is wonderful.
“Of course, the big question is whether we’ll get an official pickup for production.
“I keep my fingers crossed. I love the show so much; I’m so glad that it’s doing well.”
“One of the things that has made me so happy is how much the cast loves the show, and the writing staff loves the show, and the way that the cast expresses their love through all the social content that they’ve been doing.”
Not Suitable for Work completed Mindy’s trilogy loosely based on her life.
Never Have I Ever explored the teenage experience, while The Sex Lives of College Girls followed young women through university. Not Suitable for Work completed the progression by focusing on post-college life and young professionals in New York.
