"I am not responsible for Aamir’s work."
Kiran Rao has responded to Sandeep Reddy Vanga’s comments towards her and her ex-husband Aamir Khan.
When Kiran appeared to criticise the misogyny in Sandeep’s work, the filmmaker seemingly became defensive and disgruntled.
The Animal (2023) director had said:
“One assistant director showed me the article from this superstar’s second ex-wife where she was saying that Baahubali and Kabir Singh promote misogyny, promote stalking.
“I think she doesn’t understand the difference between stalking and approaching.
Sandeep further sniped at Aamir Khan’s film Dil (1990) and a song from the movie that objectified women. He continued:
“I want to tell that woman that go and ask Aamir Khan about the song ‘Khambe Jaisi Khadi Hai’. What was that?”
Kiran Rao shot back at the words of Sandeep. She clarified that she hadn’t even seen Animal. She explained:
“I have talked about [misogyny] on various platforms and at various times but I have never taken the name of any film.
“Because it’s not really about the specific film, it’s about the issues and I will continue to speak on these issues.
“So, why Mr Vanga has assumed that I was talking about his film, you will have to ask him because I haven’t seen his film.
“I have never commented or taken the name of any of his films.”
Kiran also addressed Sandeep’s criticism that was levelled at Aamir’s film. She expressed:
“Actually, Aamir is one of the few people I know who apologised for specifically the song that Mr Vanga was talking about which is ‘Khambe Jaisi Khadi Hai’ and other such films.
“There are very few people who would look at their body of work and apologise for something that they did they think is problematic, in retrospect.
“So, I think he is one of those people who have stepped up and taken responsibility as a creative person, as a person speaking to a mass audience for his work and that’s really laudable.
“I am not responsible for Aamir’s work or Aamir Khan.
“So, I wish Mr Vanga would address his questions directly to Mr Khan.”
In the interview which sparked this controversy, Kiran stated when successful films are made with regressive material, it is hurtful to her:
“I suppose when it is a really regressive sort of messaging, and it makes hundreds of crores, it hurts.
“Because you had the opportunity and you could have pushed the needle in some direction and you didn’t.
“So those are the things that sometimes bother me.”
On the work front, Kiran Rao’s second directorial film Laapataa Ladies is due to be released on March 1, 2024. The film is produced by Aamir Khan.
