"It’s a double-edged sword"

Kareena Kapoor who is known for her candid remarks has reacted to criticism regarding Shahid’s Kabir Singh (2019).

The film directed by Sandeep Reddy Vanga follows the life of Kabir Singh who is a quick-tempered surgeon.

After the woman he loves marries another man his life spirals out of control. He resorts to violence, alcohol and drug abuse.

As a result of this portrayal, Kabir Singh started the debate over the notion of toxic masculinity for audiences.

Despite the harsh disapproval, the film went on to become one of the highest-grossing releases. It was the greatest of Shahid’s career and surpassed Rs 300 crores at the box office.

In addition, the negative comments stemmed to Kiara Advani’s character. She played the role of Preeti who was a timid woman and also fell prey to mixed reviews.

According to a conversation with Filmfare, Kareena Kapoor disclosed that she has not seen the film. She said:

“I haven’t seen the film. But clearly, it hasn’t affected anything because the movie has made over Rs 300 crores. So, it’s a double-edged sword. Because there are people who are actually going to watch it and have found something that they love. Otherwise, it is not possible for it to have done so well.

Kareena continued to express her disapproval of Kiara Advani’s character. She explained:

“But I am happy that people that are talking about it and if you ask me, I don’t personally believe in a character like that because that’s not me as a person.”

Kareena went on to highlight that she was happy that people are voicing their opinions and concerns about the film. The actress claimed:

“But at the end of the day, it’s a film and it has worked.”

“But I’m happy that people are talking about things and they want their voice to be heard.”

Yet, Kareena acknowledged that the number of harsh remarks outweighed the praises. She said:

“They clearly are outnumbered by the people who have loved the film. That’s the reality which is sad.”

Kareena Kapoor is set to appear on the big screen once again. She will be starring in Good News (2019) with Akshay Kumar, Diljit Dosanjh and Kiara Advani.

She will also be seen in the sequel to 2017 film, Hindi Medium, titled Angrezi Medium (2020).

The list does not stop here. Kareena will portray the Mughal Princess Jahanara Begum in Karan Johar’s Takht (2020). She will appear alongside Ranveer Singh, Vicky Kaushal, Alia Bhatt and Anil Kapoor.

Kareena is also set to team up for a third time with Aamir Khan in Lal Singh Chaddha (2020). This film is a remake of the American comedy-drama, Forrest Gump (1994) starring Tom Hanks.
