Irrfan Khan confirms He is Suffering from a Neuroendocrine Tumour

"I request everyone to continue sending their wishes."

Bollywood actor Irrfan Khan has announced that he has been diagnosed with a Neuroendocrine tumour via Twitter on Friday 16th March 2018.

The rare illness affects the cells of the endocrine (hormonal) and nervous systems. Depending on the organ affected, they are also known as carcinoid tumours.

The actor tweeted a note which opened with a quote by Margaret Mitchell, “Life is under no obligation to give us what we expect” that conveys the uncertainty of the situation.

The actor has asked his fans to continue to pour in their love and support to help him power through this difficult time.

He further stated:

“The unexpected makes us grow, which is what the past few days have been about. Learning that I have been diagnosed with NeuroEndocrine Tumour as of now has now has admittedly been difficult, but the love and strength of those around me and that I found within me has brought me to a place of hope.

“The journey of this is taking me out of the country, and I request everyone to continue sending their wishes. As for the rumours that were floated NEURO is not always about the brain and googling is the easiest way to do research 🙂 To those who waited for my words, I hope to be back with more stories to tell.”

The actor mentioned that he will be flying out of the country for treatment. Many will agree that even in such a tough time, Irrfan has made sure to keep his humour intact as he asks his fans to research about his illness before reaching any conclusions.

What is a neuroendocrine tumour?

A neuroendocrine tumour is a rare tumour that can develop in different organs of the body in the neuroendocrine system. They can be cancerous or non-cancerous and develop gradually over a period of time. Most neuroendocrine tumours occur in lungs, appendix, small intestine, pancreas, rectum.

Irrfan first revealed that he was suffering from a rare illness on March 5th via Twitter. Since then, both his fans and the media had been curious to find out more. Reports of him suffering from a brain tumour or severe jaundice were floating around as confirmation was awaited.

During this waiting period, his industry colleagues have shown him great support. His wife Sutapa Sikdar too has taken to social media, asking everyone to be patient.

She wrote:

“My best friend and my partner is a ‘warrior’ he is fighting every obstacle with tremendous grace and beauty. I apologize for not answering calls msgs, but I want all of you to know I am truly humbled indebted forever for the wishes prayers and concern from all over the world.”

“I know curiosity germinates from concern but let’s turn our curiosity from what it is to what it should be. Let’s change the leaf.

“Let’s not waste our precious energies to only know what it is and just pray to make it what it should be, she added.”

Irrfan was last seen in Hindi Medium and his next film Blackmail directed by Abhinay Deo is up for release in April. Despite his illness and unavailability to promote the film, Irrfan has given a green signal to the director.
