"He stated clearly that he was taunted and teased over his sexuality."
Indian MBA student Aniket Patil, aged 25, of Bhusawal, Maharashtra committed suicide after being bullied by his colleagues.
Mr Patil worked for a multinational men’s grooming product manufacturer after completing his engineering and MBA.
He joined the company following a successful interview in 2018. Mr Patil lived in Shrushti Complex in Mumbai.
His father Dilip Patil said: “He had called on the night of June 26, around 11:30 pm and said that he had gone for a party with his colleagues.
“He told us he would speak to us in the morning as it was too late.
“The next morning I tried to call him but his mobile phone was switched off. After attempting a couple of more times, I called up his flatmate to check what had happened.
“He told me that Aniket was not responding from inside the room and that he would break open the door and revert.”
Dilip was informed on June 27, 2019, that his son was dead. A post-mortem revealed he had taken his own life.
Mr Patil’s friend Nilesh Deware handed his belongings to the family who took them back to their home.
On July 11, 2019, Dilip was going through his son’s suitcase when he found an envelope. Inside the envelope contained a three-page suicide note.
The note was immediately handed over to the police and an FIR was registered.
The FIR stated: “There was a three-page note in which he narrated his ordeal. He stated clearly that he was taunted and teased over his sexuality. His colleagues called him gay.
“Three days before committing suicide, Aniket told his mother that he was going to quit his job.”
The note stated that Mr Patil was called gay by his colleagues for not having a girlfriend.
He was also mocked for being a vegetarian and for not drinking alcohol or smoking over the course of a year.
Mr Patil’s family explained that their son was not gay and just a “simple and religious” man.
The note mentioned how Akash Vadera, Darpan Ghodke, Zakir Hussain, Rajiv Sohoni, Sachin Shrivastava and Vikas Agarwal bullied him.
According to Mumbai Mirror, Mr Patil’s family were aware of the bullying.
“My son was tortured by his colleagues and even by his bosses. They would call him gay repeatedly.”
“He was fed up of the ugly comments. He also complained to the HR but to no avail.
“On June 24 he called his mother and said he was going to resign from the company.”
Mid-Day reported that the six men mentioned in the note were arrested for allegedly causing the Indian MBA student’s suicide.
Senior inspector Anil Pofle said:
“We have registered the offence and summoned all the accused for questioning. We have to verify Patil’s claims about the torture.”
