"People with sensitive skin should avoid this"

An Indian beauty influencer shared a video of herself using green chillies as a “natural lip plumper”, leaving many social media users baffled.

Shubhangi Anand, who is based in Delhi, was dressed in a green ensemble, appearing to be getting ready to go out.

She holds two green chillies before cutting them in half.

Shubhangi then looks in a mirror and rubs the spicy ingredient over her lips.

As the chillies’ effects seemingly kick in, the influencer takes a deep breath and adds a lip tint.

With a noticeably plumper pout, Shubhangi finishes her look with lip gloss.

She poses for the camera and admires her lips before cheekily biting on her ‘natural beauty ingredient’.

In the caption, she asked: “Would you try?”

The video received over 21 million views and left many confused, with some quick to label it a hazardous beauty hack.

One wrote: “Inappropriate beauty standards and insane methods to achieve those standards.”

Another named Dr Saru Singh warned:

“Now if you expose yourself to UV (sunrays), get ready for hyperpigmentation that would last you a lifetime. Just saying.”

A third said: “People with sensitive skin should avoid this because it could give side effects.”

Some accused Shubhangi of being desperate for attention, with one writing:

“Anything for content.”

Another comment read: “This is the dumbest thing on the internet.”

Others took the opportunity to make fun of the influencer, as one joked:

“I think it’s called spicy lips.”

Pointing out her eye shadow, a user wrote:

“Did you touch your eyes with the chilli hands? Your eyes have also changed colours.”

Many imagined the painful effects a man would experience if they were to kiss her after she had applied chillies on her lips.

The mockery appeared to irritate Shubhangi and she responded:

“What’s the big deal?

“When we use lip plumper it also causes a tingling sensation on the lips.”

“Don’t try it if you don’t want to. Nobody is forcing you.”

The criticism continued as one said her bizarre beauty hack was always going to lead to trolling:

“But you are forcing us to savagely mock you.”

Another highlighted that the amount of negative comments was evidence that her video was problematic:

“When one or two people abuse you then you understand that people are foolish but when the whole comment section gets filled with the abuse, it means there is a problem in the reel and this is really pathetic.

“No one will try whether you say it or not but this is annoying while watching as well.”

As the backlash continued, Shubhangi tried to justify that her ‘spicy’ beauty hack was a better alternative than cosmetic procedures.

She wrote: “Wow, the comment section is going crazy?

“This is still better than getting face surgeries, botox and fillers done.”
