A 50-year-old woman is set to be honoured by the Chief Minister (CM) of Madhya Pradesh, Shivraj Singh Chouhan for rescuing a gang-rape victim.

In September 2020, Sribai Dhanak, of Abchand village in Sagar, Madhya Pradesh used a stick to prevent a rape from happening.

When the story of Sribai Dhanak’s courage was revealed to the police, Superintendant of Police Atul Singh sent her name to the CM for the honour.

Speaking on the incident, Sribai stated that on September 27, 2020, she had been reaping crops in the field when she suddenly heard a voice screaming “Amma save us”.

She explained that she saw a naked woman coming towards her screaming for two children whilst being chased by four men.

When they saw Sribai, three of the alleged rapists turned and ran away.

Sribai picked up a stick near her and called for her son Devraj. Together they chased the remaining rapist away.

The family called the police and gave the rape victim along with her 2-year-old and 6-month-old children clothes and food.

The victim had allegedly been too scared to file a report against the rapists, but Sribai and her family gave her courage.

The victim of the crime stated that she had been married for five years, and her husband worked as a labourer.

On the day of the incident, she got off the train at Sagar Railway Station at around 5 am.

The woman had reached the platform when a man asked her where she needed to go, when she said Baleh, he stated she would need to take the bus.

When she reached the bus stand, she was informed that the bus would be coming in three hours.

The victim claimed that the same man from the station followed her to the bus stop and fraudulently brought her to Abchand village.

He held the victim and her children hostage, the perpetrator was aided by four other men.

She alleged that the men molested her in the night and had plans to sell her.

The victim managed to escape and run away from her pursuers when she was saved by Sribai in the field.

The police have reportedly arrested the four accused in the case, one of them has been identified as Areepi Maheen Ahirwar.

His companions include his brother and two other associates who have not been named by the police.

Sribai will reportedly be honoured for her heroism by the CM of Madhya Pradesh.
