Indian and Pakistani students in Kyrgyzstan were among several foreigners subjected to mob violence on May 17, 2024.

The violence happened in the capital of Bishkek.

As a result, India and Pakistan have advised students to stay indoors.

The Indian Consulate tweeted: “From the moment information about the incident was received, law enforcement agencies of the Kyrgyz Republic took prompt measures to detain persons involved in the event, both foreign citizens and citizens of the Kyrgyz Republic.

“The situation was completely under the control of the security forces. The safety of citizens and public order was ensured.”

Foreign Affairs Minister S Jaishankar has urged all Indian students in the Kyrgyzstan capital to stay in regular touch with the embassy.

Meanwhile, Pakistan issued a warning to students in Kyrgyzstan after several incidents of violence.

Police said they had mobilised forces in Bishkek to quell the violence, in which hundreds of Kyrgyz attacked hostels housing Indian, Pakistani and Bangladeshi students.

Police in riot gear were deployed as large crowds gathered in anger over an alleged fight between local and foreign people.

On social media, videos show large groups breaking down doors and assaulting international students.

Pakistan said it had set up emergency hotlines for those affected by the violence.

In a statement, Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif expressed concern over the incident, saying Islamabad would fly back any Pakistani citizens who wanted to leave the country immediately.

On social media, there are claims that three Pakistani students have been killed while several women have been raped.

However, no confirmation has been made, with the Pakistan Consulate saying:

“Despite social media posts about alleged death and rape of Pakistani students, so far, we have not received any confirmed report.”

It is believed that tensions escalated after videos of a fight between Kyrgyz students and foreign students, namely Pakistanis and Egyptians, went viral on social media.

The brawl, which occurred on May 13, was seen by locals as a blatant violation of the hospitality accorded to the foreign students.

The attacks initially started in hostels before spilling out onto the streets.

Kyrgyz mobs attacked anyone perceived as foreign, whether they were men or women. The Kyrgyz mobs began going on a manhunt around the city for foreigners.

Several Kyrgyz personnel took to the streets on Friday night alleging “lenient treatment” by officials against the foreigners involved in the fight.

Police have said that they detained three students as soon as they received reports of the May 13 fight.
