A disturbing video showing an Indian-origin woman being assaulted on a crowded train platform in Calgary, Canada, has sparked outrage.
The viral footage shows bystanders failing to intervene as the attack unfolded.
The incident occurred on March 23, 2025, at approximately 1:40 pm at the 3 Street SE CTrain station.
The suspect, identified as Braydon Joseph James French, is seen grabbing the woman’s jacket, shaking her violently, and splashing water in her face.
He then slammed her into the transit shelter walls and demanded her phone before fleeing without taking it.
Bystanders looked on as French walked away from the train platform.
The woman was able to contact authorities after the attack.
Police apprehended French within 30 minutes, crediting witness assistance for the swift arrest.
A Calgary police statement on X read: “As a result, Braydon Joseph James FRENCH, 31, of Calgary, has been charged with one count of attempted robbery.
“At this time, the incident is not believed to be racially motivated, however, our Diversity Resource Team is engaging with those in the community who are impacted by this incident.”
Authorities have offered support to the victim, who has requested privacy.
CPS District 1 commander, Inspector Jason Bobrowich, said:
“Thanks to the support of witnesses in the area and to the swift actions of our members, we were able to arrest within 25 minutes of this incident.
“These types of incidents cause concern in the community and will not be tolerated in our city.”
After footage of the attack went viral, many wondered if it was racially motivated as the woman appeared to be of Indian heritage.
While police do not currently believe race is a factor, their Diversity Resource Team is engaging with affected community members to address concerns.

Online reaction has been intense, with many condemning the lack of action from bystanders.
One wrote: “No one nearby stepped in to help her.”
Others highlighted the potential problem that comes with intervention:
“Sadly if people intervene, they end up getting in trouble.”
“I once stopped a person from targeting an old man and when the police got there I was the one who was being told I should’ve stood to the side and just call the police.”
Some slammed the perpetrator, calling him a “coward” and “weak”.
Explaining what happened before the attack, one X user wrote:
“This is only one part of the video that was recorded by a woman who was at the scene.
“This man approached the girl and grabbed her water bottle, he drank some of it and threw the rest on her. He then broke the bottle and left.
“She called 911, he came back and started snatching her phone.”
