Surjit's husband decided to evict the daughter-in-law
A police case has been registered against a daughter-in-law for brutally assaulting her mother-in-law.
The incident happened in the town of Kharar, Punjab.
It was reported that the suspect carried out the attack as a form of revenge after the victim evicted her from the house.
The perpetrator was identified as Sandeep Kaur while the victim was named as Surjit Kaur.
After the attack, Surjit explained her ordeal to the police from her hospital bed.
She told officers that her son, Vikram Singh, got married to Sandeep, a resident of Khamanon, in 2008.
However, the marriage soon became unhappy as they started having regular arguments. Surjit alleged that Sandeep would usually instigate the rows over various matters.
It was reported that the quarrels were a regular occurrence until 2016. When they became more heated, Surjit’s husband decided to evict the daughter-in-law from the house.
Sandeep returned to her maternal home but continued to stay married to Vikram. The in-laws also continued to provide food for Sandeep, delivering it to her house.
However, the eviction angered Sandeep and she decided to take extreme action on Friday, February 21, 2020.
Surjit was home alone when she was attacked. Sandeep entered the house and confronted her mother-in-law over the eviction.
She began verbally abusing Surjit before brutally beating her. Sandeep fled when Surjit began screaming.
After leaving the house, Surjit managed to make her way to the phone and call Vikram.
Vikram arrived at the house and took his mother to the hospital. Meanwhile, the police were also informed and later turned up at the hospital.
Surjit also told police that this was not the first time Sandeep attacked her. She said that her daughter-in-law beat her sometime in March 2017.
After hearing her statement, police registered a case against Sandeep under the Indian Penal Code.
An investigation is ongoing and officers are working to locate Sandeep’s whereabouts.
Cases of a daughter-in-law beating or killing her in-laws are not uncommon in India.
In Chhattisgarh, a woman was arrested after she murdered both her in-laws. The accused killed her husband’s parents in a row over money.
The accused, Premlata, had been married to a Border Security Force officer. She got into regular disputes with her in-laws because her husband would usually send money to them instead of her.
On one occasion in August 2019, the daughter-in-law got into a heated row with her mother-in-law and ended up beating her with an iron pipe, causing serious head injuries.
The victim was rushed to the hospital where she underwent a CT scan, however, no police report was filed.
On February 10, 2020, the mother-in-law and daughter-in-law were at home when a row broke out.
In a fit of anger, Premlata grabbed the victim’s head and slammed it off the ground before strangling her to death. After killing her, Premlata covered the body in a cloth.
She later bludgeoned her father-in-law to death with a metal pipe.
Premlata was arrested when locals told police about the frequent arguments and the physical abuse she had previously subjected her in-laws to.
