"This old woman is a proud Ex member of INA"
Often the news stories from India are those of a daughter-in-law being abused and mistreated by her in-laws. But this deplorable incident is that of a daughter-in-law physically abused her mother-in-law.
The sad and tragic incident took place in Niwaz Nagar village of Haryana’s Mahendragarh district. It was caught on camera after being filmed on a mobile phone by a girl from the neighbourhood.
After which the video was shared online and has since gone viral, catching the attention of the Indian and global public.
The footage shows the daughter-in-law, named Kanta Devi, wearing an orange blouse, pushing, pulling the hair with force and verbally abusing a very elderly mother-in-law on a manja (weaved bed), as she lies there.
The victim has been named as Chand Bai.
Devi attacks the Bai who tries to obstruct her but is not able to, as she is swung around the bed and physically abused.
A Twitter user, Rishi Bagree, shared the video and tagged people to help the old woman.
As part of his tweet, he expressed his concerns saying about the treatment of the woman by the daughter-in-law:
“This old woman is a proud Ex member of INA and get Rs 30000/- Govt pension who is regularly beaten by her Daughter in law.”

Manohar Lal Khattar, the Haryana Chief Minister, was also tagged by another user requesting him to take action on the matter of physical torment against the old lady.
Khattar reacted to the incident and described it as “deplorable and condemnable”. She stated that such behaviour should not be tolerated in a civilised society.
In his tweet, he said the case had been registered and that Devi, the woman accused of the abuse in the footage, had been arrested by police.
Reports say that police went to the house of Chand Bai and brought the daughter-in-law, Kanta Devi, into custody on Saturday, June 8, 2019.
Devi has been charged with section 323 (punishment for voluntarily causing hurt) and 506 (punishment for criminal intimidation) of the Indian Penal Code.
Bai was also picked up by the cops and taken for a medical check-up.
A police official said:
“We are taking her for medical examination after that we’ll take her wherever she wants to go.”
It’s reported that the husband of Chand Bai was an Assistant Sub Inspector in the Border Security Force and thus, she receives the pension from the government.
Police are now conducting further investigations into the incident related to the daughter-in-law after medically examining Bai and taking her statement.
