    Paprika is made up of ground dried bell peppers in its most basic form. Standard paprika is composed almost entirely of this ingredient.

    Paprika also comes in spicier varieties. The most common form of this is Spanish paprika, made by adding ground chilli peppers to the original paprika. Smoked paprika is also imported from Spain. Its distinctive flavour comes from the drying process; it is dried by smoking wood in order to infuse the spice.

    Hungarian paprika is another common variety. Many believe the origins of paprika to be within Hungary as salt and paprika is a more common combination than salt and pepper. 

    The Hungarian paprika differs from the traditional paprika as it isn’t always as sweet as the standard variety and often has a stronger flavour. This flavour is so distinctive that Hungarian paprika is often considered its own variety.

    You can trace the origin of paprika in its standard form to Mexico. Paprika is made from peppers native to this region. As well as having uses as a seasoning, it was also used as a medicine.

    After originating in Central America, paprika was brought to Spain in the 16th century for use mainly as a decorative plant before the spice became popular. From here, the simple standard paprika became more complex and the flavoursome Spanish varieties began to develop.

    Once it had been brought to Europe, the trade of paprika expanded to include Asia and Africa as well and the varieties continued to develop.

    The strong Hungarian variant of paprika can trace its origins to Turkey. The peppers for the original Hungarian paprika have their origins in this area before coming to Hungary.

    Even the word ‘paprika’ is Hungarian. This just goes to show you how prevalent this spice is in Hungarian culture. The origin of paprika in Hungary, however, was as a medicine rather than a flavouring. This is similar to the origin of paprika in Mexico.

    Paprika was also popular in the past due to its brilliant red colour. Paprika has a historic use as a colouring. Even in the modern day, China imports paprika for its use as a colourant. Many recipes will still often encourage you to use paprika as a garnish to add a splash of red.

    Why is Paprika so Popular?

    It should be easy for you to guess why paprika is so popular: it’s tasty. Paprika is a great way to add flavour to almost any dish without always adding too much spice.

    The various subtypes of paprika also mean that you can pick and choose your favourite flavours to add to a dish, depending if you want it sweet, spicy or smoky. Many types of paprika are so popular in Hungary that you can actually visit their paprika museum there.

    Because of its sweet and smoky flavour, paprika is not as common to use in Indian cooking. Instead, the spice is substituted with red chilli powder.

    Paprika has a historic use as a medicine which contributed to its spread across the globe. Even today, the spice has many health benefits such as being rich in vitamin A.

    Paprika is also popular because it can be quite easy to produce. Even though the peppers require drying and grinding, the plants can tolerate a variety of different climates.

    This tolerance means that you can grow peppers for paprika almost anywhere. This also means that there isn’t ever a real shortage of paprika; the supply can generally keep up with the demand.

    Producing paprika easily to keep up with demand also means that it’s cheap. If you can buy paprika for a fraction of the cost of other spices, of course, you’re going to keep your spice rack stocked with it.
