Lakmé Fashion Week (LFW) is the one week in spring when Bollywood celebrities and fashionistas gather in Mumbai to witness collections of their favourite designers.
Between 11th March and 16th March, the Grand Hyatt Hotel in Mumbai hosted the shows of more than 90 designers, who treated the audience to their latest achievements in style and vision.
LFW combined Eastern with Western influence, giving classic pieces a modern and unexpected twist. The event opened with Manish Malhotra’s collection called ‘A Summer Affair’. The pieces in pastel colours and light materials celebrated the concept of summer.
The biggest surprise was actress Sonakshi Sinha, who strutted on the runway, dressed in one of the designer’s masterpieces – a black gown adorned with white lace. She awed the audience with her slim figure and graceful presentation.
Day 1
Day 1 started with Huemn, who presented a collection in tune with the ruling trend of luxurious sportswear. The key item was a tailored black suit, embellished with white and yellow horizontal lines on the sleeves.
Nikhil Tampi’s collection included everything a woman needs for the summer in a variety of colours and fabrics. The final gown is destined to reappear on the red carpet.
Tarun Tahiliani closed the evening with a presentation of gorgeous gowns that combined traditional saree with Hollywood glamour. Actress Jacqueline Fernandez turned bride as she walked the ramp. She wore a red anarkali with gold zari borders.
The day also featured DRVV, Sneha Arora, Sounia Gohil (with a showstopper by the stunning Richa Chadda), Swagger by Saj, Quirkbox, Nishka Lulla, Rajini Ahuja, Narendra Kumar.
Day 2
Day 2 continued with Khem, who put on an outstanding show, featuring romantic gowns in white and blue. They looked like they had emerged from ‘One Thousand and One Nights’.
Suman Nathwani brought the beach to Mumbai with his collection, which included swimsuits and effortless dresses, presented in bright colours and fun attitude.
Veda Raheja’s collection was a modern staple of chick and style. She presented tailored pieces and effortless dresses, which culminated with a showstopping gown.
The day culminated with Karleo’s collection, who displayed frocks that blended Hollywood glamour and traditional Indian attire. A breathtaking bride dress closed the show.
Other presenters included Aartivijay Gupta, Urvashi Joneja, Payal Singhal, Sailex, Abdul Halder, Asmita Marva, Mandira Bedi, ILK by Shikha and Vinita and Verb.
Day 3
Day 3 featured the collections of Mrinalini Chandra, Sengar, [Ka][Sha] and N&S Gaja, Prama by Pratima Pandey and Swapnil Shinde, Gaurang, Purvi Doshi and Pinnacle – Shruti Sancheti, Lotus Sutr and Armaan Aiman, kOECSH vIK BY kRESHA bAJAJ, Krishna Mehta, Sayantan Sarkar and Sva by Sonam and Paras Modi.
Gaurang Shah’s ‘Chandbali’ collection saw bright colours or regal traditional wear. Colours ranged from surkh red, gulabi pink, zard yellow, narangi orange and sabz green. Showstopper was the dimple-smiling Kirron Kher who ended the show in a pink brocade sari.
Junelia Aguiar treated her audience to a whirl of bodycon dresses, tailored jumpsuits, wide hats and dramatic gowns.
The day ended with Anita Dongre’s collection of feminine dresses and skirts in pastel colours and sheer fabrics.
Day 4
Day 4 begun with Papa Don’t Preach, followed by Ken Ferns, Gaga and Sonaakshi Raaj, Anushka Khanna, Atithi Gupta, Ritika Merchandani and Farah Sanjana, Rajat K Tangri and Shehlaa by Shehla Khan, Shantanu and Nikhil, Arpita Mehta and Anushree Reddy.
Ashdeen and Zhen and Mossi’s presentation commenced with a beautiful spectacle, and featured feminine dresses in white, navy blue and black. The show culminated with a short lace dress, complemented with a dramatic cape.
Kommal Sood presented bold skin-revealing dresses, embellished with feathers and sequins, which were the ultimate verdict of glamour and extravagance.
Closing day 4 was Anju, who gave modern twist to traditional Indian attire. The clothes looked effortless in pastel colours and light fabrics. The final outfit was an exceptionally elegant dress in dove grey.
Day 5
The final day also featured Pretty Stoned, Kunal Anil Tanna, SS Surya and Theorem by Nitin Chawla, Nuur Khandi and Payal Khandwala, the Stylecracker Hood, Shyamal and Bhumika, Debashri Samanta and Kltche, Little Shilpa, Raven+Rose and Junelia Aguia.
Neeta Lulla’s collection celebrated simplicity with dresses in bold colours and clean silhouettes. Bollywood actress and fashionista Priyanka Chopra closed the show with a long beige dress, embellished with gems.
Jyotsna Tiwari presented exquisite collection of evening wear inspired by saari, which unfolded in showstopping evening wear. Bollywood actress Sunny Leone strutted on the runway in a shell pink dress that accentuated her figure.
The spectacular Grand Finale showcased the collection of Rajesh Pratap Singh. It embodied everything Lakmé Fashion Week signifies; boldness, creativity and glamour. Impeccably tailored suits and sheer skirts in pastel colours evolved in all-black evening wear and party dresses. The pinnacle of the show was Kareena Kapoor Khan, who walked the ramp in a long black coat-dress, adorned with silver roses.
The 22nd season of Lakmé Fashion Week continued the tradition of presenting clothing that combined impeccable execution and exceptional design.
The Summer/Resort season 2014 offered a wide variety of clothing – from the traditional saree to glamorous gowns and revealing party dresses. It was a glamorous celebration of the creative accomplishments of Indian talent.
