Elon Musk has claimed Donald Trump is named in files linked to disgraced paedophile financier Jeffrey Epstein.
The tech billionaire made the unverified allegation in a post on his platform X.
He said: “@realDonaldTrump is in the Epstein files. That is the real reason they have not been made public.
“Mark this post for the future. The truth will come out.”
Musk offered no evidence. The White House dismissed the comment as politically motivated.
Press secretary Karoline Leavitt said: “This is an unfortunate episode from Elon, who is unhappy with the One Big Beautiful Bill because it does not include the policies he wanted.
“The president is focused on passing this historic piece of legislation and making our country great again.”
The outburst marks a dramatic escalation in tensions between the two men, who were previously aligned on several political issues.
Epstein died by suicide in jail in August 2019. He was awaiting trial on charges of sex trafficking minors.
In another post, Musk criticised Trump’s tariff policy. He said the tariffs “will cause a recession in the second half of this year.”
He also endorsed a call for Trump’s impeachment and questioned whether it was “time to create a new political party in America that actually represents the 80% in the middle”.
Musk announced his company SpaceX would begin decommissioning its Dragon spacecraft “immediately”. The move followsTrump’s threat to cancel government contracts involving Musk’s firms.
Dragon is the only US vehicle able to transport crew to and from the International Space Station.
The fallout has already affected Tesla. The company’s shares lost around £111 billion in value, closing 14.3% down in a single day.
Tensions deepened after Trump voiced disappointment with Musk’s criticism of his tax and spending bill.
The US President said: “I’m very disappointed in Elon. I’ve helped Elon a lot.”
In a post on Truth Social, he added: “Elon was ‘wearing thin’, I asked him to leave, I took away his EV mandate that forced everyone to buy electric cars that nobody else wanted (that he knew for months I was going to do!) and he just went crazy!”
The remarks followed Elon Musk’s resignation from his government role at the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE).
On June 3, Musk attacked the legislation, calling the bill “outrageous” and a “disgusting abomination”.
The bill, passed in May by House Republicans, includes multi-trillion-dollar tax breaks.
Trump has labelled it the “big, beautiful bill”. Musk, by contrast, called it the “big, ugly bill”.
Responding to Mr Trump’s criticism, Musk wrote: “False.
“This bill was never shown to me even once and was passed in the dead of night so fast that almost no one in Congress could even read it!”
Time to drop the really big bomb:@realDonaldTrump is in the Epstein files. That is the real reason they have not been made public.
Have a nice day, DJT!

Elon Musk also claimed his influence helped secure Mr Trump’s election win.
He said:
“Without me, Trump would have lost the election, Dems would control the House and the Republicans would be 51-49 in the Senate.”
Last week, the Tesla CEO revealed his term as a “special government employee” was ending.
Meanwhile, Musk’s father denied the pair were feuding:
Speaking to Sky News, Musk’s father denied the pair were feuding:
“There’s no rift between Elon and Donald Trump.”
But Errol Musk admitted: “Elon is not a very good politician.”
