It has been announced that Bollywood classic Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge (DDLJ) is set to be adapted into a Broadway musical.

The Bollywood rom-com, starring Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol, became the highest-grossing movie of 1995.

It earned over Rs. 250 Crore (£24 million) at the box office and remains one of India’s most successful films.

One Mumbai cinema, Maratha Mandir, had run DDLJ ever since its initial release almost three decades ago before Covid-19 struck.

Now, the film’s legacy is continuing as director Aditya Chopra’s cult classic will be reimagined for the stages of New York.

Titled Come Fall In Love – The DDLJ Musical, it will be produced by Yash Raj Films and mark Chopra’s Broadway debut.

The announcement was made on Instagram.

They added that a team of Indian and US-based artists would come together to put on the play.

Laurence Oliver Award-winner Nell Benjamin will be the lyricist with Vishal and Shekhar composing.

Tony and Emmy winner Rob Ashford will choreograph along with associate choreographer Shruti Merchant.

Fellow Tony and Emmy winner Derek McLane will be on scenic design.

Tony, Emmy and Grammy-winning Bill Sherman has been roped in as music supervisor.

However, casting has not been done yet and a global search will be underway for the “big-budget musical” soon.

It comes as Kajol was trolled for celebrating DDLJ’s anniversary on Wednesday, October 20, 2021.

She took to Instagram to share a scene of her character Simran running after a train SRK’s character, Raj, was on.

She added the caption: “Simran caught the train 26 years back and we are still thanking everyone for all this love… #26YearsOfDDLJ.”

However, many netizens were not impressed and thought the post was insensitive amid the ongoing Aryan Khan drugs case.

One Instagram user asked: “What about supporting SRK in this time of need?”

Another commented: “Your so-called best friend SRK is in the worst time of his life.

“If you can’t support him at least respect him and his family. DDLJ is nothing without SRK.”

One person wrote: “Shame on you for not supporting SRK.

“Really shows a lot about your personality.”

However, others were more supportive.

One person said: “Unforgettable moments watching this movie.”

Another added: “The best movie in Indian cinema.”

Come Fall In Love – The DDLJ Musical is set to be on Broadway in 2022.
