A tragic incident has unfolded in the Bengali entertainment industry where a hairstylist attempted suicide after reportedly being denied work.

Reports claim that she was subjected to severe professional harassment from the hairdressers’ guild.

The woman allegedly set herself on fire but thanks to the quick actions of her daughter, her life was saved.

Tanushree Das sustained serious burns and is currently recuperating in a hospital.

A complaint was filed against 11 guild officials at Haridebpur Police Station for allegedly instigating Das’ suicide attempt.

Das reportedly had not received any work based on the guild’s instructions for three months, leading to significant financial difficulties as she tried to support her family.

In a purported suicide note, she described the alleged ongoing harassment and the loss of work opportunities due to pressure from the guild.

She wrote: “I was denied one job after another.

“I was set to work for Moinak Bhowmik’s upcoming film but the production manager informed me that the guild had instructed them not to give me the assignment.”

Following her suicide note, a formal complaint was lodged at the Haridevpur police station in West Bengal against the accused individuals.

According to reports, she was not only barred from seeking work independently but potential clients were also instructed not to hire her.

This left her in a precarious position, especially as her husband is reportedly unwell, placing the burden of family responsibilities squarely on her shoulders.

Srijit Mukherji, Parambrata Chatterjee and Sudipta Chakraborty were among the ones who rushed to the hospital to check on the hairstylist’s condition.

Film hairstylist Hema Munshi expressed her anger over the incident and emphasised the need for fair treatment for all members.

She said: “I have raised this issue multiple times, demanding that everyone be allowed to work.

“I couldn’t believe that such an incident would still happen.”

Sudipta Chakraborty commented: “I cannot accept this injustice. I will see the end of it.”

Sharing details of Tanushree Das’ ordeal, she added:

“The hairstylist of our industry, who came to this industry by holding my hand, is currently lying in the emergency room of the hospital.

“She wrote a suicide note and wanted to kill herself by pouring kerosene oil. Thankfully, she was saved. Treatment is ongoing.

“She wanted help. I was in class. Couldn’t answer in time. I can’t forgive myself. The burning example of what harassment in the workplace cab result in is right now in front of my eyes.”

“I will see the end of this Tanu, I promise.
