‘Laapataa Ladies’ selected as India’s Entry for the 2025 Oscars

Kiran Rao’s ‘Laapataa Ladies’ has officially been selected as India’s entry for ‘Best International Feature Film’ at the 2025 Oscars.

Kiran Rao’s Laapataa Ladies has been chosen as India’s official entry for the 2025 Oscars.

The Film Federation of India (FFI) announced the movie was selected for ‘Best International Feature Film’.

In response to the announcement, Rao expressed:

“I am deeply honoured and delighted that our film Laapataa Ladies has been chosen as India’s official entry to the Academy Awards.”

She emphasised that this achievement reflects the hard work and passion of everyone involved in the project.

Kiran Rao continued: “This recognition is a testament to the tireless work of my entire team, whose dedication and passion brought this story to life.

“It has been a privilege for me to work with a talented team for this film.

“I want to thank the entire cast and crew from the bottom of my heart, whose immense talent, dedication and hard work made this film possible.

“Cinema has always been a powerful medium to connect hearts, transcend boundaries, and ignite meaningful conversations.

“I hope that this film will resonate with audiences across the world, just as it has in India.”

Kiran Rao also thanked Aamir Khan Productions and Jio Studios for the support received for the film.

Laapataa Ladies, which gained popularity after its release on Netflix in April 2024, features an engaging story.

It revolves around two brides who lose their husbands during a train journey and get swapped.

The film received positive reviews for its storytelling and performances.

It features a talented cast that includes Nitanshi Goel, Pratibha Ranta, Sparsh Shrivastav, Ravi Kishan, and Chhaya Kadam.

Aamir Khan, Rao’s ex-husband and the producer of the film, shared his pride in the announcement.

He expressed his happiness for Rao and her team, thanking the selection committee for choosing Laapataa Ladies to represent India.

“My heartfelt gratitude to our audience, our media, and the entire film fraternity for all the love and support they have given Laapataa Ladies.”

He also acknowledged the role of OTT platforms like Jio and Netflix in giving the film a wider audience.

Aamir Khan added:
