The highly acclaimed series Barzakh, starring Fawad Khan, has been nominated for Best Drama Series at the Asian Academy Creative Awards 2024.

The show was produced by Shailja Kejriwal and Waqas Hassan and directed by Asim Abbasi.

The show, which translates to “Limboland” in English, premiered globally on Zindagi’s YouTube channel and ZEE5 on July 19, 2024.

The awards ceremony will take place in December 2024 in Singapore, where Barzakh will compete with entries from 13 other countries.

Reflecting on the nomination, director Asim Abbasi expressed his gratitude:

“Writing and directing this show was one of the most surreal experiences.

“I am truly grateful for the dedication of the exceptional cast and crew, whose unwavering commitment brought this story to life.

“This recognition not only highlights their excellent performances but also the creative collaboration that made Barzakh possible.

“I would like to take this moment as an opportunity to thank everyone who believed in this vision and helped us create this show.”

Shailja Kejriwal also shared her excitement, emphasising the significance of the nomination on an international stage.

She said: “Being nominated for Best Series at the Asian Academy Creative Awards is a deeply meaningful milestone for our entire team.

“We’re incredibly thankful to everyone who has supported us, especially the global audience that has embraced Barzakh.

“This story explores universal themes of family, loss, and the emotional bonds that connect us all, regardless of culture or geography.”

The series has been praised for its cinematography and bold narrative choices.

However, it has also faced criticism for venturing into themes not commonly explored in Pakistan, including LGBTQ themes.

This aspect has led to backlash from sections of the audience, resulting in a mixed reception.

A user said: “Of course, the funding comes from the west. Obviously they will give a reward for promoting this LGBT cr*p.”

Another wrote: “Of course, anything un-Islamic has to be encouraged in International festivals.”

Set against the breathtaking backdrop of Hunza Valley, Barzakh tells the story of a 76-year-old man.

He stuns his estranged family by announcing his engagement to the ghost of his first love.

This unique premise leads to a series of emotional confrontations that delve into themes of love, loss, and family dynamics.

Despite the criticism, the series has made a significant impact, and its nomination reflects the hard work and creativity of its team.
