“I got a lot of matches, and I even talked to people"
Abhijeet Sawant, the first-ever winner of Indian Idol, has admitted to creating a Tinder profile without his wife’s knowledge.
Abhijeet rose to national fame after winning Indian Idol in 2004.
His success led to playback opportunities in Bollywood and a fast-paced celebrity lifestyle. But he met his wife, Shilpa, when he was just 18, long before he became a household name.
On the Hindi Rush podcast, he was asked about an old news article that mentioned him having a Tinder profile and whether it was fake.
Abhijeet admitted: “No, that was my own profile. I don’t use it anymore, but I was curious about how it worked.”
While speaking on the podcast, Abhijeet Sawant said he made the Tinder profile out of curiosity when visiting the US.
He said: “I was in the US, and a friend told me about Tinder when it first came out here in India, and I made a profile, and I used to open it from time to time to just check how it works.
“Although my wife didn’t know about this, even now I think she is unaware of it, but I had that profile for quite some while.”
He also said he used the app to meet and talk to new people.
“I got a lot of matches, and I even talked to people I met on the app.
“I like talking, and you can have very deep conversations with women, which aren’t possible with men. I found 2-3 people on the app, and we used to talk a lot.
“But then I had to delete the account, because someone posted about it on Twitter.”
When asked if he had any regrets, Abhijeet Sawant said he was not bothered by public opinion.
“It doesn’t matter if anyone knows about the profile or not,” he said, adding that he is not someone who hides personal matters.
The singer also reflected on how his public image has changed since his time in the spotlight. He noted that people no longer treat him the way they did when he was famous.
Abhijeet Sawant’s journey from a middle-class background to music fame earned him a loyal fan base. But over the years, his presence in the music industry has diminished.
Still, he continues to be remembered as a key figure in Indian reality TV history.
