"It has now been recognised as a key project"
The Kabi Nazrul Institute is preparing to unveil a powerful tribute to national poet Kazi Nazrul Islam through a unique rock music initiative.
A special album will feature ten of his most stirring motivational songs, and to mark the launch, a concert will be held on May 30 at Manik Mia Avenue.
Ten of Bangladesh’s most renowned bands have come together for this ambitious project.
The participating groups include Warfaze, Souls, Dalchhut, Ark, Shironamhin, Different Touch, MNB, Rebel, Black, and F Minor.
Each band has recorded one Nazrul classic, reimagined with modern instrumentation while keeping the original lyrics, composition, and notation intact.
The event is expected to draw a massive crowd. In addition to the ten album tracks, the bands will perform other iconic songs by Nazrul.
They will offer a full evening of powerful musical storytelling.
The concert will also feature poetry recitations and special segments celebrating Nazrul’s legacy.
Latiful Islam Shibli, Executive Director of the Kazi Nazrul Institute, shared the significance of the initiative in a statement, saying:
“This album and concert were at the top of my agenda after I assumed office. It has now been recognised as a key project by the Ministry of Cultural Affairs.”
He emphasised the need to reconnect younger generations with Nazrul’s work through a format they can relate to.
Shibli added: “Nazrul’s songs have always embodied resistance, equality, and resilience. These values still guide the nation.”
The album includes potent songs such as ‘Karar Oi Louho-Kopat’, ‘Ei Shikol Pora Chhol’, ‘Tora Shob Joyodhwoni Kor’ and ‘Mora Jhonjhar Moto Uddam’.
Other featured tracks include ‘Durggom Giri’, ‘Kantar Moru’ and ‘Pordeshi Megh’.
All songs have been produced under expert supervision, with noted Nazrul Sangeet scholar Yakub Ali Khan overseeing the musical accuracy and interpretation.
Cultural Affairs Adviser Mostofa Sarwar Farooki will officially inaugurate the concert, which begins at 5 pm and is open to all, free of charge.
The institute has also confirmed that the album will be available online via its website and social media platforms after the launch.
Shibli noted that the album will serve as a long-term reference for other musicians interested in covering Nazrul’s music.
He said:
“We want this to be a benchmark for future generations.”
By merging tradition with contemporary expression, this initiative aims to preserve Nazrul’s revolutionary voice in a form that resonates with today’s youth.
