One of the most popular European holiday destinations is Greece. One of the reasons for this is because of its philosophical and democratic background.

Greece is made up of beautiful buildings. It is bursting with the history of astronomy and mythology – not to forget the fact that Greece is also famous for its delicious food.

As you may be aware of, Greece is made up of many islands. We have all the top places to visit when it comes to history, entertainment, relaxation, and an all-round perfect holiday.

Corfu

Located just off the West Coast of Greece, it is a popular destination for holiday makers due to the various beaches and Mediterranean climate. Although Corfu’s tourism provides the most income, the island contains over two million olive trees, which to many people it is an attraction in itself.

There are a variety of places to visit in Corfu including museums, waterparks, riding stables, castles, scuba centres and the ideal hiking spots.

Places in particular include Kerkyra Old Town consisting of the archaeological museum. The Asian Art Museum is another great place to visit. The Corfu Trail is popular among tourists requiring 8 to 10 days to cover its 137 mile course from one end of the island to another, with great sight-seeing and landscapes.

Recommended restaurants on this beautiful island include Fagopotion which only opened in 2008 but is already reputable for its traditional recipes and freshly caught fish around the Diapondia islets.

Because of its large student population, Kerkyra town stays lively all year long. Dizi Bar offers affordable drinks, along with various themes on Saturday and Sunday nights such as trance and reggae. Edem Beach Club is another party place for all you party goers, again with affordable prices and located off the main highway in Dassia.

A place to stay can vary from 5 star hotels to luxury apartments. Corfu Palace Hotel was among the first luxury hotels on the island. Kontokali Bay Spa and Resort is another five star hotel and from reviews is well managed. Great for a relaxing break away, with excellent spa facilities.

Zante

An island in Greece, Zante is also known as ‘Party Island’. With tourists from around the world, the night life is off the chain! The best location to stay at if you are looking to party, is along the main strip which consists of many restaurants and night clubs, as well as other entertainment such as bowling, golf and tourist shops.

One of the biggest clubs in Laganas is Medusa which is a private night club, packed with young party goers and various types of music including R’n’B and dance. Another popular club is Ghetto, accompanied with various kinds of music not to mention the drinks are affordable too!

Great food places are located on the main strip. Munchies restaurant is great with both traditional Greek food as well as British food. The staff are very friendly and cater to every ones needs.

The strip consists of various shops which offer boat rides around the island, where you can see historical sites such as the famous Ship Wrecked Island, where the ship is actually still on the island! You also get to see turtles in the water as Greece is known as being popular for nesting sites, as well as seeing the beautiful blue caves.

Athens

The capital of Greece and is a great city to visit if you’re one for historical sites. The Acropolis which is an ancient citadel located on the high rocky outcrop above the city of Athens and contains the remains of several ancient buildings.

The Parthenon which is one of the momentous locations in the world. It was built in 440 BC, the architecture of this ancient temple is a must see for anyone.

The National Archaeological Museum is the largest archaeological museum in Greece and is devoted to ancient Greek art. Sntagma Square is a town square located in central Athens and is the oldest and socially most important square of Modern Athens.

The Plaka is known as the ‘neighbourhood of gods’ because of its proximity to the Acropolis and its many archaeological sites. Cape Souniou is known as the site of ruins of the ancient Greek temple of Poseidon, the God of Sea.

Santorini

Santorini is by far one of the most beautiful islands you will set eyes on. The island is the remains of a volcanic explosion, one of the largest recorded in history.

With the beautifully painted white and blue buildings, there is no doubt that the architecture in Santorini is quite unique.

Yposkafo are cave houses which make up some of the best architecture in Greece. These cave houses were built to help shelter from the wind, these buildings have now been turned in to luxury resorts, and offer some of the best resorts in Santorini.

Like every other island, Santorini offers many excursions and activities, and there are always an abundance of historical sites to visit, but if you are after a tranquil view then visit Oia Castle, Fira, Firostefani or Imerovigli and simply enjoy the sunset.

Ammoudi is a beautiful small port on the island of Santorini that cooks up some of the best fish dishes Greece has to offer.

Greece can offer some of the best historical sites in the world, but also caters to the party animals, head over to Corfu or Zante to experience the amazing night life of Greece, or for something more relaxed and serene Santorini is the perfect spot, and if you’re only after history then head over to the capital Athens.

Don’t be put off by the idea of only experiencing the history and not the night life, travel within Greece is cheap and there are tons of tour operators offering great deals on excursions. So wherever you decide to go, remember every island in Greece offers a different and unique holiday experience.
