A woman has divided opinion online with her take on arranged marriages, claiming it is the “only way for creepy, useless men to get married”.

Alpana Sharma, who is a digital creator, questions why arranged marriages continue to be normalised in India.

Acknowledging that she will likely face backlash, Alpana said:

“I’m going to get cancelled for this but I strongly believe that in India, the concept of arranged marriages is glorified so much because that’s the only way 70% of the men who are like creepy, useless, disrespectful, do not even know how to talk to women can get a wife.”

The clip went viral and amassed over 120,000 views.

It also triggered thousands of reactions, with many users backing the creator’s claims while others raised concerns about the tone of the discussion.

Agreeing with Alpana, one wrote: “Most men today know if their marriages weren’t arranged, there would be no marriage.”

Another said: “Arranged marriage? You mean socially accepted human trafficking? No thanks.”

A third added: “Remove arranged marriages from India and you’ll see how the majority of Indian guys can’t even find a girl for themselves.”

Offering a stronger take on arranged marriage, one comment read:

“Basically, marriage legalised rape planned by men and their parents.”

The video also sparked personal stories, as one person recalled:

“You’re not wrong.

“This guy from London I used to talk to literally told me, ‘If I don’t find anyone I’m just going to go find a poor girl in India who will appreciate me’, predator much!?”

Another detailed: “Some guy messaged me on a matrimonial profile saying if you want to go forward, please accept or else reject the request instead of wasting time saying it’s rude.

“I mean, hold on, I wasn’t rejecting because that might be rude or hurting (keeping in mind that parents handle accounts).

“But the audacity to say that and that too when he is 37 years old and I’m 25.”

On the other hand, one person noted what could happen if arranged marriage were non-existent:

“So if arranged marriage didn’t exist, all women would share 30% men and be their 3rd-4th wife?”

Arranged marriage remains a complex and sensitive issue in India.

For many families, it is viewed as a cultural institution rooted in compatibility, shared values and community networks. For critics, it raises questions around autonomy, consent and social pressure.
