The sound of gunfire echoed through the campus corridors
A Punjabi student was caught on camera shooting his female classmate dead inside a classroom before taking his own life.
The incident happened at Mai Bhago Law College in Tarn Taran and it is believed that the shooter was upset that she had repeatedly turned down his proposals.
Police said the shooting took place shortly before lectures were due to begin, sending shockwaves through the college.
According to investigators, 20-year-old Prince Raj entered the classroom carrying a bag.
He reportedly approached Sandeep Kaur and another classmate and began speaking with them.
The three later moved to seats at the back of the classroom and continued their conversation.
CCTV footage shows Raj standing up, reaching into his bag, and pulling out a pistol with his back turned. He then turned around and shot Kaur.
The classmate recoiled in shock as Kaur collapsed to the floor.
Seconds later, Raj turned the gun on himself.
The sound of gunfire echoed through the campus corridors, triggering panic among students and staff.
Prince Raj was rushed to a nearby hospital in critical condition and placed under medical supervision. Police later confirmed that he succumbed to his injuries.
A forensic team recovered the weapon and several empty cartridges from the classroom floor.
Tarn Taran senior superintendent of police Surendra Lamba said a “friendship angle” was emerging in the early stages of the probe.
SSP Lamba said: “We have seized the mobile phones of both students and sent them for forensic examination to understand the nature of their relationship and the events leading up to the shooting.”
The victim’s family claimed Raj had been harassing Kaur for months and visited their home to propose marriage.
Kaur rejected him, stating that she wanted to focus on her studies.
She ended up getting engaged to another man, which allegedly upset Raj.
Manpreet Kaur, the victim’s sister, told India Today:
“On Friday, he told her, ‘If you can’t be mine, I won’t let you be anyone else’s’.”
“After two days, he shot her.”
The family further alleged that Prince Raj’s behaviour was obsessive and one-sided.
Manpreet added: “He would stare at her every day and say he liked her. She told him about our family’s circumstances and that we had no father, but he didn’t listen.”
The victim’s family has also questioned how a firearm was brought onto the college premises.
Although the family has alleged that Prince Raj’s motive was due to being rejected, police continue to investigate to determine the full details of the murder-suicide.
