Why is #StayStrongJemimaKhan Trending?

"My political life made it difficult for her"

Jemima Goldsmith aka Jemima Khan, the ex-wife of jailed Prime Minister, Imran Khan, has received overwhelming support on X, but why?

The pair have been broken up for over 20 years, however, for Pakistanis, the memory of Jemima remains vivid.

This became evident once again on social media when they rallied to back her in response to accusations from former President Asif Ali Zardari.

Zardari alleged that Goldsmith had been involved in financing bloggers to generate propaganda in favour of her ex-husband’s campaign, even as he faces imprisonment.

During an interview with Aaj News, Zardari exclaimed:

“Please fear God! This is what vloggers settled abroad are saying.

“Jemima is giving money to these bloggers.”

However, Jemima herself commented on the post on X, writing “This is obviously not true” and added she only prays for “peace and prosperity in Pakistan”.

It has led to the hashtag #StayStrongJemimaKhan which has over 10,000 tweets.

Numerous Pakistani users have shared archival videos showcasing moments of Khan and Jemima dining together and making public appearances.

In a widely circulated video, Khan can be heard expressing sorrow over their separation due to the reluctance of the Pakistani people to accept her.

Other videos feature collages of old pictures of the couple accompanied by songs conveying themes of separation and sadness.

It seems as though a collective desire exists among netizens for the reunion of the couple. Although this is highly unlikely.

Moreover, Zardari, alleged that Khan enjoyed privileges during his imprisonment that Zardari himself never had access to.

According to him, Khan has access to gym facilities, home-cooked meals, and regular meetings with his legal team.

Zardari further claimed that Khan travels in a Mercedes for his court hearings – a luxury not even experienced by the current president of Pakistan.

Khan wrote in a statement released by his party Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf:

“Whilst Jemima tried her best to settle here, my political life made it difficult for her to adapt to life in Pakistan,”

Jemima converted to Islam after marrying Imran Khan in 1995 and gave birth to two sons. However, she divorced him in 2004 but they remain close friends.
