“This crisis gives us the opportunity to overhaul VW’s structure."
The much publicised scandal surrounding the Volkswagen (VW) Group cheating its diesel emissions test for certain car models continues to cause global uproar.
VW, along with brands like Audi, Seat and Skoda, have launched new websites to help owners check whether their cars are fitted with the infamous EA 189 EU5 engines and require to be recalled.
Check on these sites below to find out if your car may be affected:
Input your Vehicle Identification Number (VIN), which can be found in your service book and the bottom of your windscreen.
VW Group will contact you directly with ‘step by step’ instructions, if your car needs to be updated.
Works required to vehicles will range from simple software modifications to tougher hardware changes.
Recently appointed CEO Matthias Müller suggests the diesel cars fitted with emissions cheating software may be recalled as early as January 2016.
11 million cars worldwide are thought to be affected, with an estimated 1.2 million of those within the UK.
In a recent interview with German newspaper Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung, Müller comments:
“We submit to the Federal Motor Transport Authority this week technical solutions. Are accepted, we order the parts. Everything goes as planned, we can begin in January with the repair.”
He adds: “This crisis gives us the opportunity to overhaul VW’s structure. We want to make the company smaller and slimmer, more decentralised and give the brands more responsibility.”
As legal proceedings become underway in the UK against VW Group for the ‘dieselgate’ scandal, speculation around compensation is expected to be in the millions.
The greater issue around what manufacturers will do to meet the stricter new Euro 6 emissions standards, which came into effect in September 2015, remains unclear for now.
