"a recent comment I made has caused confusion"
Bangladeshi leg-spinner Rishad Hossain clarified his comments about foreign PSL players after they sparked controversy.
His statements, which involved emotional reactions of fellow cricketers during the recent India-Pakistan conflict, were picked up by several Indian outlets.
Some of these were misquoted or presented without the full context.
Rishad had been in Pakistan playing for Lahore Qalandars.
This was before the tournament was suspended indefinitely on May 9, 2025, due to escalating tensions between India and Pakistan.
He, along with fellow Bangladeshi pacer Nahid Rana and other international players, was evacuated to the UAE for safety amid the conflict.
While in transit through Dubai Airport, Rishad briefly spoke with Bangladeshi journalists.
In that conversation, he reportedly mentioned that England’s Tom Curran was seen in tears.
Rishad also said that New Zealand’s Daryl Mitchell had said that he will not return to Pakistan in the future.
The quotes quickly gained traction online and were widely reported, especially in Indian media.
However, on his official Facebook account, Rishad clarified that his words had been misunderstood.
He wrote: “I’m aware that a recent comment I made has caused confusion and has unfortunately been misrepresented in the media, creating a false perception.”
He acknowledged that the interview was informal and took place in transit, adding that the statements made lacked nuance.
Rishad said they exaggerated the sentiments of the players involved.
He added: “It lacked full context and unintentionally overstated the emotions involved.
“I sincerely regret any misunderstanding it may have caused.
“I’ve offered an unconditional apology to Daryl Mitchell and Tom Curran.”
He also emphasised the bond he shares with his Qalandars teammates, saying he deeply respects them and values the unity within the team.
Rishad said: “I hold deep respect for my fellow teammates and truly value the Qalandars brotherhood – where we always stand by one another, no matter what.”
The Pakistan Super League, which was disrupted earlier, is expected to resume as tensions between India and Pakistan appear to be cooling down.
While no official date has been announced, the return of overseas players will likely depend on further assurances regarding their safety.
Rishad Hossain, still early in his international career, expressed hope to return to PSL action and contribute to his team once the tournament resumes.
